amalfi coast

We are going to be in Rome for a few days and my sister suggested taking a rental car down the amalfi coast for a day. We wanted to go to pompei but that seems alittle much. Any suggestions. We plan to end up back in Rome.

Hi V,

If Pompeii for a day is too much, so is the AC.

You'll need at least 6 hr just to get to Sorrento and back.

How about the ruins at Ostia Antica or a visit to Orvieto?

Hi -

I agree that the trip for one day is too much.

When in Rome I stay with relatives and have twice driven to Amalfi Coast/Positano for 5 day stay. Leaving early in the morning it takes about 3 hours to get to Positano from Rome, all Autostrada with the last 1/2 hour to 45 minutes from Naples over the mountain to Positano on coast roads with stunning views.

If you can at least stay overnight to enjoy an evening on the AC and some great seafood the roundtrip will be worth it.

Enjoy,

Cassparker

Hi Vruth - I've done the Amalfi Coast several times as a day-trip from Rome with visitors. I never had a single complaint ;)

It's a long day - but logistically it is viable. However it's much easier by public transport than by car.

With an early start by train from Rome
you can be in Positano by 11.00.
www.trenitalia.com

The best way IMO is to catch the 09.55 hydrofoil from Napoli Beverello dock. This is a direct service to Positano and takes 1 hr.

(This service is daily until 15th October - weather permitting of course).

You could spend a couple of hours in Positano and then go to Pompeii - or alternatively continue by ferry from Positano to Amalfi ... and end up at Salerno at the end of the day.

http://www.salernocity.com/comune/tr...i/costiera.asp

The 17.45 ferry from Amalfi, for example, would allow you to catch the 18.50 Intercity train back to Rome (- arr. 21.40).

Of course it would be better to stay overnight if you can - but if this is your best chance to see the Amalfi Coast and/or Pompeii then I'd say ... grab it ! :)

Hope this helps ...

Steve

I have never done it but I suppose you could do a few hours in Pompeii and a drive along the Amalfi if you started very early in the morning from Rome and made it a very very long day. I would however not drive it myself but would hire a car and driver for this and would probably not do it in high season when traffic down south tends to be particularly bad.

Look at taking the Eurostar Alta Velocita trains from Rome to Naples that have reduced the travel time and then perhaps get the CV to Sorrento and then use buses to travel the AC and before getting the train at Salerno back to Roma
