My wife and I will be driving from Rome to Positano this Spring. We will spend 3 nights in Positano and 2 nights on Capri. Any suggestions for hotels, mid way between Rome and Positano? Any restaurant suggestions for Positano and Capri?

I drove from Rome to Positano this past October and the trip (about a 1/2 day)isn't long enough to need a hotel unless you have some other reason. As for restaurants .... Chez Black is right on the beach and is very picturesque. The Covo dei Sarceni hotel is also on the beach and they have a nice restaurant as well. little further up in town is the Hotel Murat and they had a very nice looking court yard for dining. We didn't eat there, but we will on another trip .... we really enjoyed Positano and do plan on returning.

You might want to stop in Sorrento. We loved it, stayed there to visit Pompeii, Capri & Positano. I'd highly recommend the Albergo Minerva - a cliffside hotel overlooking the Bay of Naples. It's on the way out of town, but a very short walk. The rooms all have balconies, the staff is great, and the price is right. I don't have an address or phone number at hand, but it should be easy to find. Enjoy Italy!

Drive directly to Positano. My last Italy visit (10/97), I stayed at "La Fenice" in Positano. It's listed in Karen Brown's Bed & Breakfast book for Italy. Also, be prepared that what makes Positano so charming & exquisite is that it's perched on the cliffs of alongside the Mediterranean and is VERY hilly. You'll love it - but it's like spending 3 days on a stairmaster. Buon viaggio!

<BR>Robin, what a very negative attitude to take. You sound like a talking monopoly board with your drive directly to Positano comment ( and don't stop to collect $200 ). I agree with Colleen, Sorrento is worth a stop.

Not for nothing, but everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion. I happen to agree with Robin and would also go directly to Positano. And Robin, thank you for your physical description of Positano. It's the first one I can recall and would have liked to have had it as well as a description of the Amalfi coast prior to going there last October. I also think Positano is very charming and enjoyed it immensely and do plan on returning. I don't think Robin's comments were negative in any way.
