Amalfi Coast
 

After reading peoples comments about the scary roads i am having second thoughts of driving the Amalfi Coast. Is it really that bad? We are thinking of going early october...is that a good time?

We had no problem at all. Go slow. The toughest part are the buses.We were there in May and there were only the local transportation buses; I can't imagine what it's like in high season. You do need nerves of steel but driving gave us much needed flexibility.

Oct will not have the hordes of tourists, buses, etc. Go for it. Millions drive it every month. How bad can that be? It will be remembered forever.

Jennifer, I am going to Italy for 10 days leaving mid September and will be driving from Rome to the Amalfi Coast. Have never driven in Italy and my husband and I and anouther couple are looking forward to the adventure. I have been reading posts on this forum for about a month now and I am going with the ones that say driving is not that bad and it is definitely more flexible. I am sure it will be fine. Jennifer<BR><BR>We did Roma to Amalfi in late May. (search for trip report in Italy-use Conca as a search word). The only real difficulty you'll have is getting thru Napoli to the coast.<BR><BR>My suggestion: Stay on the Autostrade & take the Sorrento cutoff. In Sorrento you will see signs for Positano. Aim that way & you'll go over the mountain to the coast road.<BR><BR>The coast road itself is very busy & very slow & therfore very safe. The mountain road is gorgeous. Be couteous & let the faster vehicles pass & watch your speed on the hundreds of switchbacks.<BR><BR>In the end, I found it kind of fun (my wife didn't).

Hi Jennifer. Prepare yourself for a great adventure driving the Amalfi coast.<BR>It will give you the flexibilty you want, not having to depend on the buses. But do not expect to travel really quickly from town to town as the traffic can be very slow moving at times. Parking is not the greatest, either.<BR>You should be better off in October than during the summer.

If you drive yourself, you will miss the absolutely awe inspiring first views of the most beautiful sight in the world!!!!!!!!!!!

Jennifer, it all depends on how confident a driver you are. To some drivers it is easy, to others they are probably mental wrecks when they get through it. Have you driven winding roads with steep cliffs and not been nervous? If so, then go ahead and drive, it is beautiful, but you have to pay attention.

Jennifer--by all means drive! it is an exhilirating experience. and, no, you won't miss the awesome first views because you will be able to stop at any of the numerous turnouts and drink it all in at your own pace.<BR>for a tongue-in-cheek view of driving the A. Coast, do a text search on "Rules for Driving the Amalfi Coast". it contains much humor and as well as some useful tips. if you can't locate it, post a message and i will top it for you.<BR>you will have a wonderful time!

Well don't just blindly give her the go-ahead to drive. Who knows what kind of driver she is? Only she and her passengers and the oncoming traffic really know.

Been there 3 times and would never drive it! Have driven in Germany, Austria, Italy, France and Spain. Good luck!
