Amalfi Coast

Has anyone done the Amalfi Coast by bus lately? Can you see all the sights in the area by public transport easily? What are bus/train fares like? Your info is appreciated.

Julia, if you read Rick Steves' "Italy" guidebook, it answers your basic Amalfi Coast questions. Such as, the bus ride and views.

Also, if you use the search function on this site, you will find dozens of very recent posts and trip reports about this area.

Good luck!

Hello Julia,

You can visit everywhere on the Amalfi Coast easily and cheaply by public transport. Here are some useful timetables:-

www.uniplan.it/sita/s509.txt
www.costadiamalfi.it/orari.htm
www.campaniatrasporti.it/sita/5121.htm

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Julia,
yes my boyfriend & I travelled the Amalfi coast in June by public transport. The Circumvesuviana from Naples goes to Sorrento and you can stop at Pompeii or Herculaneum (Ercolano). It takes an hour to Sorrento but is rather hot & uncomfortable. Recommend the air conditioned SITA buses from Naples - a < 2 hr ride will take you directly to Amalfi, or Sorrento, or anywhere in between. The local buses go regularly between Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, etc. - cheap and easy. There are ferry services to Capri from most of the resorts. Bus & train is cheap, ferries not bad - only taxis are really expensive.

Word of advice - because we didn't have all the details we needed, sometimes we lost a lot of time wandering around trying to find where to catch the ferry, or where the bus station was etc. Make sure you have all the timetables you need and check them beforehand, (Steve suggested some good websites) and plan your day accordingly. Also, we sometimes ended up travelling later than we wished - I'd say make sure you plan when you're going to travel to avoid catching buses etc. in the middle of the day, or wasting the best part of the day travelling. The best parts of using public transport was: we could relax and let someone else do the driving, we saved a lot of money, and we didn't get lost once we were on the transport!
If you want more info on the Coast feel free to email me.

Yes, we took SITA among several towns, and it was the best bargain around. Cheap, easy, and a good way to enjoy the views along the coast. As noted above, just be careful of your stop. We missed our stop one night and wound up miles away in a small town where, at 9:30 pm, all buses and cabs had stopped running, and nobody spoke English (we spoke minimal Italian). We paid a very kind man we met on the street a lot of money to drive us back to our hotel.
You can certainly do the Amalfi Coast by public transport as everyone said. In fact I think a car would only be a hassle given that these towns are so tiny. My only word of advice would be to base yourself in one town and do the others as day trips. The buses are somewhat crowded local buses and you don't want to be hauling your luggage on them everyday, planning to stay in a different town each night!

Also buses and trains are super-cheap. For example the trip from Positano to Amalfi (about 40 min) is only about $1.50 by SITA bus.

Have a great trip!
