Amalfi Buses Disruptions?

Friends just returned from Italy said they wanted to take the world-famous Amalfi Coast buses from Salerno to Positano via a change of buses in Amalfi. But when they got to Amalfi they found no buses to Postianto for some reason - well they were told there was some round about two-hour bus detour they could do but the coastal buses were disrupted.

Anyone know why and if this is a recurrent problem for a while. Would affect advice to take the train to Salerno and not Sorrento and hopping the buses from there to Postiano (boats run in season I guess too) - but if taking the bus best to ask at the start rather than get stuck midway!

Any updates appreciated.

Sometimes there are rock slides in certain areas or perhaps there was a strike (sometimes they are just for a few hours).

The buses are only disrupted due to a strike or a slide. It happens, but it is a rare occurrence.

There was a landslide a few days ago.

It's unlikely that a strike would affect just one route.

While a strike typically wouldn't affect one route, I've experienced strikes starting a certain times of day. You could take your first bus without a problem and then a strike start at 1 pm or so and your connecting bus is part of the strike.

The road between Sorrento and Positano is partially closed currently due to a landslide. Cars are alternately using the one open lane but the SITA buses are not running or may be running on a limited schedule.

Any idea how long it might be closed? Days, weeks, months?

ekc Feb 13th, 2015 08:48 AM

No word yet, but I doubt it would be closed for months. It is too important in this tourist-driven part of Italy.

Thanks ekc. If you hear any more I'd appreciate you're posting updates. I will be in Sorrento the last week in March (so just over a month from now) and was planning on taking the bus to Amalfi a couple of times.

The road has been reopened.

Thanks ekc. Only three more weeks!
