Amalfi Bus Ride
 

Any fodorites taken the Amalfi Coast bus ride from Sorrento to Salerno...? We are going to be on Ischia and heading to Rome, but I was thinking of catching a ferry from Ischia to Sorrento, then taking the bus to Salerno to see the views, then go from Salerno to Rome on the train....any one have comments????? thanks.

I took the bus between Sorrento and Amalfi in Feb 2002, but not Salerno. From Sorrento, the bus was easy. Buses run from the Sorrento train station frequently, about one an hour. The scenery was spectacular, but if you have problems with hairpin turns and heights, don't go. I felt perfectly safe with the Italian bus drivers. A number of schoolchildren rode the bus too.

Hi Josh,<BR><BR>We trained from Florence to Salerno, changing trains to a local in Naples. You go down a level in the station for local trains. From Salerno, we took the SITA bus to Amalfi where we had to change buses to continue. On to Praiano from there. It was a very long day, but the scenery was fantastic!<BR><BR>From there we took the bus &amp; Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii for a day trip (another day), returning to Praiano. Travel took a long time &amp; I would recommend to everyone to see Pompeii either to/from the Amalfi Coast.<BR><BR>It was amazing to see scrape marks and chunks taken out of buildings,homes &amp; cars along the Amalfi highway! It was also very interesting to see what happens when 2 buses have to pass on the road. All traffic stops, bus personnel get out &amp; direct the bus drivers until they can wiggle past each other. Our bus passed with literally 3 inches between it and the other bus!<BR><BR>It's beautiful &amp; you will have a great time. If you suffer from car sickness - better go prepared with the necessary medicine &amp; take it well in advance - like in Sorrento or Salerno.<BR><BR>Buon viaggio!

tough question to answer because it varies greatly depending on number of stops and traffic volume/delays. my best guess is 2-3 hours, but you don't say what time of year you plan to do this, and that makes a big difference. try contacting SITA (Societa' Italiana Transporti Automobilistici) for seasonal schedules; a google search on SITA will get you there.<BR>the views will be stunning; be sure to sit on the right side of the bus if you go FROM sorrento TO salerno. enjoy.

Hi Josh,<BR> My SITA bus schedule says about 1 1/2 hr from Sorrento to Amalfi and 1 1/4 hr from Amalfi to Salerno.<BR> You will have to wait between buses in Amalfi.

I will be there in July....spending the first 4 days of our honeymoon on the island of Ischia, then on to 4 nights is Rome. Trying to fit in some way to take the talked-about bus ride....without making a day too long. Any suggestions on taking a bus one way and a ferry back to Sorrento?

That would be a nice mix...you could see the sea from the scenic road...and the coast from the sea. I'm guessing there is a ferry from Salerno to Sorrento. It would probably eat up an entire day if you did it that way. If you did it as a daytrip, you might be happy just going from Sorrento to Ravello by bus, then bus back to Amalfi and ferry back to Sorrento. Actually that would be my favorite option as you could spend some &quot;quality time&quot; in Ravello which from way up there, has amazing views.

Took the bus from Sorrento to Amalfi and then another bus to Ravello. Ravello was beautiful and quiet and I highly recommend it. I was nervous about the bus ride but my fears turned out to be unfounded. It wasn’t the least bit frightening and the scenery was beautiful. The bus driver pointed out Sophia Loren’s house perched on the cliff below the road. As a previous poster suggested, the best seats are the front ones on the right side. We got to the bus stop early and were the first people waiting just to get front seats. Be sure to get tickets before you board the bus. You can buy them in any bar or tobacco shop. There’s a bar just on the corner of the main street to the left as you exit the train station/bus depot.<BR><BR>adrienne<BR>

Josh, what you want to do along the Amalfi coast is beautiful and well worth doing. But trying to fit it all into one day is going to be a pain, and either make for a very long day or perhaps not be possible. I would recommend, if you can make the time, stopping over for one night somewhere along the way -- either Ravello (my favorite town along the coast) or Positano or (fewer hotel possibilities, but best center for transportation) Amalfi.

Ferry or boat information can be found at WWW.metrodelmare.com. The journey by bus from Sorento to Salerno (change of buses required in Amalfi) should take you around 3 hours,however during the summer months you can easily add an extra hour to the journey.

I'm interested in the same bus ride. Will I give up much of the sights/experience if I end my trip in Amalfi and head back to Sorrento instead of continuing to Salerno?

I suggest that when the bus arrives in Amalfi,that you transfer to the Ravello service and spend some time in Ravello before taking the bus back to Amalfi and then back to Sorrento.

You might also want to consider taking the ferry from Sorrento to Amalfi, and taking the bus back.
