Amalfi as a home base for the Amalfi Coast
I was wondering what everyone thought about staying in Amalfi as a home base for a week in the Amafi Coast area? We (2 couples 60-64 years old) will be visiting this area the first week of October 2018. I am planning on flying into Rome and taking the train to Salerno. Will I need to change trains from Rome to Salerno and then back to Rome from Salerno or is this a train I can remain on for the entire trip? Any tips on what to do while there on holiday/vacation would be greatly appreciated.

No plenty of direct Rome-Salerno trains - check more on ferry schedules during that time - buses take forever - for quick reference train schedules and if have to change I always recommend the German railways schedule site for all European trains - www.bahn.de/en - so easy to use and gives so many details besides times. Of course if booking ahead online you can save some money but those trains - discounted - are train-specific and cannot be changed nor refunded I believe from that specific train - so if flying and taking train leave plenty of time for plane to be late, etc. Book at www.trenitalia.com - great info Italian trains -www.seat61.com - especially on booking own online ticket; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com. |

Oops:
Cannot paste the link, but you can click on my name and go to my 2011 report about a trip to Paris, the Amalfi Coast and Rome. |
Skimming seems a great useful report for Amalfi:

I think it depends on what, exactly, you want to do while on the Amalfi Coast!
Amalfi is convenient for buses and ferries along the coast, and so a good base for Salerno (worth seeing, IMO, not just for access to Paestum), Capri, Positano, Ravello, etc. If you want to visit Naples, Pompeii, and / or Herculaneum, Amalfi is not particularly convenient – although it is not impossible. You can get an idea of your transportation options at rome2rio.com – just be sure to check the links to which it directs you, as the main site is not sensitive to seasonal variations in schedules. Hope that helps! |
Thanks PalenQ I was not able...thanks again.
