Amalfi and Tuscany for 20th anniversary trip
Hello,
We are planning for a 7 night trip to celebrate our 20th anniversary to Amalfi coast and Tuscany. I have done a fair bit of research and now I am torn about where to stay in Amalfi. I prefer Positano bcos it resembles Santorini and we loved Santorini We are looking at Siena in Tuscany and thinking of spending 3 nights in Tuscany and 4 nights in Amalfi. But after reading a lot of posts, may be we should just stay in Amalfi for entire week ? Any thoughts ? Any suggestions for the places to stay ? We are looking for a upscale type of property and not apartments . And we don't mind the stairs and steepness of Positano. So, I hope I get some clarity for my trip on this forum Kush |
Sorry for the weird question mark font :(

I would simply stay in Positano for the entire time. It will take most of a day to get from Positano to Siena, which means you would really only have 1.5 days in Tuscany.
I always stay in Positano as IMO it is the most picturesque village on the AC, has a good selection of restaurants and shops, amazing views and good ferry access to Capri, Amalfi/Ravello and Salerno/Vietri. If you are planning on traveling this season, you should get to booking your hotel ASAP. Many of the better places book a year in advance. |
ekc, agree with that. I am leaning towards spending our entire stay in Amalfi. But if we were to split our stay within Amalfi coast, which 2 towns would make sense ? Sorrento and Positano ?

What time of year - this could make a big difference.

Beginning of July .
Thanks Kush |
Hi! I think both regions are excellent, but I will stay in Amalfi Coast OR Tuscany, and not divide the time.
One week is perfect at the AC, and the bare munimum at Tuscany. It seems that you have decided to stay at the AC, and I tell you that my preference is just ine town as a basis, either Positano or Amalfi, as you have plenty of public transport along the coast and to other attractions, as Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri. Just think if you will like one overnight in Capri, which I have never done but is on my to do List. Our first stay was five days at Amalfi, the second, with some three other couples was at a hotel in Positano, and I cannot say one is better, just dfferent. Enjoy! |
When you say upscale, that can have huge variables.
Take a look at Le Sirenuse - this is right in the heart of Positano and definitely upscale. A little further out of town is Il San Pietro - one of the Leading Hotels of the World. If these are too high, then just indicate budget in euro per night. http://sirenuse.it/en http://www.ilsanpietro.it/en/ Having said that, you may have to settle for what you can get as many upscale places sell out a year (or longer) in advance. July is very much high season. |
Thanks ! Yes, we are definitely looking at Le Sirenuse in Positano , San Pietro is not available :(
What would be a suitable accommodation in Sorrento ? Or should we look at Ravello ? We are also considering spending 1 night in Capri. Any suggestions here ? Please keep your thoughts coming |
We flew into Naples and took the ferry from there to Capri for 3 nights. We then took a ferry from Capri to Sorrento and had driver take us to Positano for 4 nights.
We liked having a couple of days on Capri and thought 4 nights was good for Positano, though 5 would have been better. |
Judy, where did you stay in both the places ?
And did you visit Sorrento at all ? Kush |
We stayed at the Capri Wine Hotel.....wonderful property but not the best location. We saw the Hotel Minerva where a friend stayed and that location was much better.
In Positano we stayed at Alcione Residence and would highly recommend a suite there. We were basically across the street from the Sirenuse. We did not visit Sorrento other than driving through it. |
Sorrento upscale hotels - the Ambassador, the Bristol, the Capodimonte. I wouldn't leave it too long to book something- it's a popular month to travel
|
Yes, book ASAP. A few days on Capri is a great idea. Also look at Hotel Poseidon in Positano.
|
We are considering Bellevue Syrene hotel or Grand Hotel Cocumella in Sorrento.
So, I am planning to modify the itinerary in this fashion: Sorrento : 2 nights Capri : 1 night Positano : 4 nights We are flying in and out of Naples, so does any particular sequence work better than the other ? Thanks Kush |
Sorrento is closer to Naples for your outbound flight, so it might make sense to end in Sorrento.
|
Do you think 2 nights is enough in Sorrento ? We are planning to start there and do a day trip to Pompeii from Sorrento. Spend 1 night in Capri and the rest in Positano.
Any feedback appreciated. Kush |
I would go for the Bellevue Syrene as it's location is more convenient.
One night on Capri seems like too much moving around - you can day trip there from Sorrento and still have a wonderful experience. It's only 40 minutes by ferry from Sorrento. |
I totally agree with Blueeyed cod. I wouldn't bother spending only one night in Capri. It's more of a hassle than anything else to pack and repack for such a short stay. Take a day trip instead. Just get a very early start! On the hydrofoil it's something like 20 min.
|
BTW, Bellevue Syrene is very nice, and very close to the Old Town for dining and shopping.
