Amalfi and Sicily

We are planning a family trip this Sept/Oct to Sorrento/Amalfi areas as well as Sicily. (two weeks total). My mom is 82, so would like any advice on nice hotels with not too many steps.

I am planning a similar trip this Oct-Nov. From my research it appears that unless your 82 year old is senior olympic material you should condider Rome and Florence and even the cobble sidewalks will be hard on old knees but at least it is pretty flat.

Dear StephenG,

Mom is not a triathelete, however, she is a native neapolitan...We are set on the Amalfi and Sicily this trip and picked Sorrento because it has the "least" hill terrain of the other towns. But thanks...

We stayed at the Hotel Il Nido in Sorrento (www.ilnido.it) and were perfectly satisfied with it. My 72-year old parents have also stayed there. It's not in town, but set up in the hills with a wonderful view of Vesuvius. The minibus runs regularly and will pick you up in Sorrento and take you into town as well. It's free. Stepping into the minibus is the only stepping you'll have to do at Il Nido. There's an elevator in the hotel. If you type "Il Nido" into the search box, you'll come up with several posts talking about it. Many Fodorites have stayed there.
