Thanks for the compliment

(MY copy of the book is over at the house in Italy...didn't know it was now difficult to get...now crossing my fingers it dosen't walk off with a guest by accident!)

"I will try to edit the books!"

I only say this from experience...I have a tendancy to want to take every book on the shelf! (when, in reality, I usually have the best days when I forget the books and camera at home and just wander and discover spots on my own..still...always like to have a restauarnt list handy!! I'm horrible...a bad meal just really wrecks my day!)

"Please forgive the obsessive tendencies now on view"

hahahahah...aren't we all? I think it is a trait of being on this board planning...and planning...and planning!

"I was thinking of A Paranza in Atrani for the first (Sunday) dinner. Would love to hear opinions of this restaurant, too. About how long a walk is it from Amalfi to Atrani?"

haven't tried it yet (!) so...please do let us know after your dinner?!

For others interested in the Capalbo book, I just ordered it on cooking.com. Supposedly it is in stock. They had a 1-3 day shipping option but I did not pay for rush shipping since we do not leave til the end of May.

I haven't seen the book yet but I hope this helps.

Great timely post for us.

We have a group of 6 that are headed to Italy on May 23rd. We will be in Positano for 3 nights.

On Sunday, we have a boat rented to take us to Capri, tour around the island and take us back to Positano. On the way back to Positano that evening, we will stop in Nerano for dinner. We will be in swim suits and shorts and would like to eat on or close to beach.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Philip - there are a few options if you would like to eat right on the beach.

From the water looking toward Marina del Cantone...

...to the far left is Lo Scoglio which has a dining area which is partially built right over the water. (they don't seem to have a website but you can find some reviews around)

then going right is a restaurant/pizzeria over the beach whose name escapes me now...

...to the right there is Pappone, a smaller family run operation. It's also the restaurant for Hotel Certosa. www.hotelcertosa.com

and the further right is Maria Grazia. www.massalubrense.it/mariagrazia.htm

(The popular Taverna del Capitano is a few steps in from the beach.)

You may also want to consider eating at Recommone, around the corner (so to speak). It's another beach area just a bit further. There's not a lot of beach there, but there is a large sunning area and one restaurant called La Conca del Sogno. www.concadelsogno.it

ekscrunchy - I couldn't get the tracking # to work this weekend. I stopped by UPS today and they couldn't get the tracking to work either. They called an 800 # and was told it was out for delivery so I hope you have it by the end of the day.

In the section about Don Alfonso, Carla credits the owners for encouraging her to write the book.

Some of the websites didn't work when I tried them. I think many small places jumped on the web page band wagon early on and then let them drop. I also noticed a few phone numbers had changed.

Vicenzo: I found this thread with your mention of Torre del Saracino in Vico Equense.

Can you give me an idea of what Vico/Seiano would be like for a 1-2 day stay in late September? I need a place on the mainland for a day or two after Ischia and before heading to the Naples airport, so am searching around for a nice hotel with good access to a couple of restaurants and swimming...

Are there other restaurants in Seiano?

Vico Equense, clinging perilously to the cliffs, is an unspoilt small town with fine views of the Bay. Picturesque narrow streets, interesting churches, and walks through the olive groves and perfumed Mediterranean scrub in the hills above the town make it a lovely place to stay.

I've stayed in Vico for several weeks in total, spread out over the last several years, in early Spring and September-October. It's an ideal base, with its own station on the Circumvesuvina as well as a good-sized bus station. Trains and buses are frequent, which makes it easy to get around the area with no need for a car.

Above the town is Convento San Francesco, Chiesa Santa Maria del Toro and the prestigious Santa Maria del Toro Culinary Arts Institute. This may go a ways toward explaining why there is so much excellent food to be found in Vico and nearby.

Eks, I suspect your feelings about food are similar to mine about photography - each provides an important <i>raison d'etre</i> for travel to these lovely places. I don't often go out of my way to search out the best places to eat, but when I unexpectedly find one, I'm delighted and the memory stays with me for a long time. I have several such memories from stays in Vico.

Once I took the Circumvesuviana to Castellamarre di Stabia. From there, it is possible to ride the funivia to the top of Monte Faito where you will find quiet and solitude in woodlands of oak and beech, a richness of wildflowers no matter the season. A walk of a few kilometers along a narrow winding road will bring you to the 4200ft-high summit of San Michele, where there is a chapel and shrine and sweeping views. Returning to the funivia, we enjoyed lunch of freshly made pasta in a small mountain taverna, ravioli with gorgonzola and nut sauce and fettucini with a ragu of wild boar and wood mushrooms, in a small room warmed by a wood fire in the corner fireplace. Here is a photo: http://gardentouring.fotopic.net/p57107362.html

Another day we took a bus to Termini, from where walked up to the small white chapel of San Costanzo, with panoramic views over Capri and the Faraglione, then walked down to Nerano and Marina del Cantone, where we spent nearly the whole afternoon on a wonderful lunch of the freshest fish imaginable at Ristorante Quattro Passi. Here's a photo down to Nerano and Marina del Cantone: http://gardentouring.fotopic.net/p56708581.html

Another time we walked into the hills above Arolo, following old goat tracks to the top of Monte Vico Alvano, where we were caught by rain, lightening, thunder, the clouds 'a murder of crows.' We arrived back in Arolo soaking wet. The owner of the small village taverna welcomed us in, bustling around to light a fire, pour us warming glasses of brandy, help us off with our wet things, offer blankets to cover our naked thighs as he hung our wet trousers to dry over chairs near the fire. Then he served us the best pasta e fagioli soup I've ever tasted, in large tureens, salads of freshly gathered greens, and pitchers of the rough local wine. When we finally waddled out, the skies had cleared and we were blinded by the subshine. Here's a photo: http://gardentouring.fotopic.net/p57107363.html
