Looking for a nice hotel in Amsterdam that is close to sightseeing and away from the red light district and is wheelchair friendly. Am I dreaming? Please help.

Check this website: http://www.visitholland.com/

you can set your hotel parameters (including disabled facilities) and get a list of hotels that fit the criteria.

I'd also contact the Netherlands Tourist Bureau, either by mail or phone, and ask for a list of facilities (I believe there was a post a month ago or so with this same theme - wheelchairs in Holland).

Those postings were mine. The cheapest hotel I have found with what I am looking for was 190.00. I was wondering why amsterdam is so much money per night when belgium and luxembourg were reasonable.

Amsterdam is an expensive city all around (not as bad as Paris or London, but still not cheap). It's also very small (hard to have 'burbs when every square inch of land is reclaimed from the sea!) and so are the buildings. I would imagine that would make wheelchair accessible hotels hard to come by.

Try contacting the tourist bureau about b&bs or homestays; there might be private homes that have wheelchair facilities, and offer b&b stays.

Ok, so I did a search: 1 star, city centre, facilities for the disabled.

Adolesce Nieuwe Keizersgracht 26

Hemp Frederiksplein 15

Leidseplein Hotel Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 79

Looks like they are in your price range; try 2* too to see what pops up.

Good luck!

We just stayed at the Hotel Estheria
on Singel in Amsterdam for about
$100. It's a four star and very###
nice. Of course, it may be more
expensive in August. You can use
the hotel reservation service from
the train station. They are very
helpful. good luck.

Check out the IBIS center hotel, just by the train station. The rooms are clean albeit small and functional. But, the cost is right. Call toll free in the US to them at 1-800-NOVOTEL.

In 1997 we stayed at the Park Hotel in Amsterdam with a triple with breakfast for $150. It has a great location. It overlooks the Leidesplein (spelling). Our room had a canal view, with the Square and the casino in view. Plenty of cafes, and even movies near by, fairly far from the red light district. It had an elevator and the staff was wonderful and the breakfast was great.
When we called directly they were booked, however, we ended up going through an agent, got in and got a cheaper rate. If you haven't, contact the tourist board and indicate you are interested in hotels. We got all sorts of flyers with pictures and agent listings with toll free numbers. Web sites were not as prevalent then, so you may get even more help in that respect. They even provided free passes to the casino. (The Marriott and the Hotel American are in site.) Also note, although it is never suppose to be hot in Amsterdam, we were there in early July and all 3 days were mid eighties. Very few hotels are air conditioned in Amsterdam, the Park was not. Also, it is not far from the Riks museum, and a little longer walk to the Heineken museum.

As I've answered to some else, try the Asterisk. It's a ten minute walk from the centre. It's always been reasonably priced, I stayed there last July and a twin room was 50 per night.
The host speaks good English and is very friendly. Tel: 020 626 23 96. www.asteriskhotel.nl
