yes Croatia is safe - however if you're expecting Croatia to be a bargain, you may be surprised. Seafood can be pricey and high season is no longer just July and August. You get what you pay for. It's a wonderful, beautiful, country (except in Dubrovnik when cruise ship passengers disembark for the day)

When I went to Croatia, people said why are you going, there`s a war going on there! Just shows you how little they know. (non traveling experts of course).

I just printed my Shutterfly calendar with my pictures from Croatia at the end of August---so it brought it all back! It is safe, English is spoken, the sights are breathtaking with a coastline to rival spectacular vistas in Italy. If you like coastal towns, as I do, you are choosing the right country. Korcula, Hvar, Trogir were wonderful---as is Dubrovnik (did the day tour to Montenegro which was excellent)
I loved the trip and highly recommend going! |
Another cheer for Croatia! We encountered the same ignorant comments before we went to Croatia. Just ignore them and let them think what brave souls you are! English is spoken almost everywhere, friendly, good-looking people, beautiful country. Plitvice Park was great and we stayed in a wonderful B&B (soba I think they're called) just a couple of miles from the park -- new house, first class plumbing, very reasonable. There are many along the same road and in May I don't think you'd have a problem getting a room without a reservation. Just pick one and ring the bell. In Dubrovnik we stayed in a comfortable, reasonably priced apartment with a view of the water and walking distance to old town. Look at www.dubrovnik-online.com for apartment rentals. From Dubrovnik you can take day trips by car, by bus or by boat to several locations. Enjoy!

My friends and I traveled to Croatia in October 2005. It was fabulous. Don't miss Cavtat, a few miles north of Dubrovnik (you can ride the bus there)and taking a day trip to Montenegro. The Bay of Kotor is stunning.
