alternate drive from Zurich to Venice

I have read many suggestions on drives from Zurich to Venice here, and the favorite route seems to be via Como.

Is there another scenic, pleasant route that would take us from Zurich to Venice in 1-2 days via St. Moritz, Bolzano, and "Dolomite Road" without going through the lakes ?

One journey might be Zurich to Innsbrucke and then down the Brenner
to Bolzano. The next day from Bolzano
to Cortina and then down to Venice.
However might suggest by rail from Zurich
to St. Moritz, overnite and then over
Bernina Pass to Tirano, via Milano to
Venice, this also (???) might also be
done by Auto. Richard of LaGrange Park, IL.

Hi Okoshi - The drive through the Dolomites is one of the most spectacular in Europe. Not to be missed ...

Rather than the 'Dolomite Road', an even more scenic route IMO is this:

Bolzano - Siusi - Castelrotto - Ortisei - Selva - Gardena Pass - Corvara - La Villa in Badia - S Cassiano - Valparola Pass - Lagazuoi* - Falzarego Pass - Cortina.

If you are going in high season don't miss some of the cable-car rides en route for breathtaking views ...

Hope this helps ...

Thank you Steve James.

How many days would you allow to do this itinerary ?

Is it reasonable to, say drive up from Venice ,drive through Cortina in the sequence you recommend, stay in Ortisei as a base for a few days, and drive the rest of the route on our way back to Milan via Bolzano ?

Thanks.

Really it depends how much you want to see, Okoshi! I never spend less than a week to 10 days in the Dolomites ...

Your itinerary sounds fine - doing my suggested route in reverse from Cortina. On this route don't miss Lagazuoi* - one of the best cable-car rides in Europe IMO.

Ortisei certainly makes a good base.

From Bolzano you could include the 'Wine Route', the Brenta Dolomites or Lake Garda en route to Milan.

Lots of options ...

Hope this helps ...

Thank you Steve James.

Including Lake Garda sounds great.

We had hoped to see some of the lake areas also, but driving to Como or its neighboring lakes doesn't sound very relaxing.

Is the atmosphere at Garda different from Como ?

I'm a great fan of Lake Garda.

The northern end is just as beautiful as anywhere on Lake Como IMO, with mountains rising sheer out of the water.

The area around Riva & Limone especially is not to be missed. Malcesine too is attractive.

Really you can't go wrong ...

Hope this helps ...
