Alsace w/o a Car
 

I'm thinking about a trip to Alsace this fall for my husband and me, and I'm wondering how easy it would be to use Strasbourg as a base and to visit villages along the Route des Vins using train or bus? I'd appreciate anyone's experiences in visiting Alsace w/o a car and thoughts in general about such a trip. We've been to Strasbourg before but not to any of the little villages.
I'm retiring in Sept. and need to have a celebratory trip to France!

This won't help but we have only done it by car. Couldn't you rent a car in Strasbourg and go from there. If you do rent a car try to get to Baden Baden for a nice celebratory massage and trip to the spa. I'm sure you will get the answer you're looking for but I would get a car if you can. You will cover more ground and see many beautiful places.

I'm also sure that this won't really help you -- but I'm planning to do the same thing in Oct.

I've rented an apartment in the village of Riquewihr for a week. My landlady told me that I'll have to take a taxi from Colmar, but that after that I really won't need a car. Well, I'm not one to try to *collect* a whole lot of villages, you know.

I intend to rent a bike and do some of the "wine route" on that. I don't want to see a lot of different areas but rather to really enjoy that one spot, maybe 30 kms or so in each direction, just meandering down the roads and stopping here and there for picnics, etc.

We almost always travel by train/bus but rented a car in this region. We went off season and perhaps that was a factor, but we liked stopping at some villages, seeing some on a drive-through, etc.

You can get to quite a few of the towns and villages by local train from Strasbourg.
