Alsace Village for Winter Base

I'm in the midst of plotting out an upcoming winter trip (Jan or Feb) that will include about 6 days in Alsace.

We're planning on visiting/staying in Colmar and Strasbourg, but would also like to stay in a village for 2 or 3 nights.

My choices now include Kaysersberg or Riquewihr. I know Riquewihr is touristy and packed during the high season, but will it have more to offer a winter traveler -- restaurants, winstubs, cafes, etc --than Kaysersberg, or will Kaysersberg be better?

Any insight, or other suggestions are welcome! Thanks.

I think that you will find that Kaysersberg has more to offer for a 2-3 night stay than Riquewihr. It would be my choice.

Also check Obernai. A bit larger than Riquewihr, so more going but still very cute.

It is really a hard decision. Both towns will make a good base to stay. Both have picturesque architecture, wineries, restaurants and both have a few (small) museums.

I would probably look for accomodation in both towns and go where I find the best hotel.

Obernai is a larger town, also picturesque, but not in the vineyards and closer to Strasbourg than to Colmar. Also an option. A similar town south of Colmar would be Rouffach.

Hi Nan,

I can very highly recommend http://pagesperso-orange.fr/schwendi/index.htm
in Kientzheim.

It's about 1.5 km from Kaysersberg and 4.5 km from Riquewihr.

You can take the bus into Colmar.

See my trip report for resto reviews and sightseeing.

Enjoy your visit.
