Alsace/Riquewihr restaurants
We will be staying in Riquewihr for a week this coming July. I'm looking for restaurant suggestions in the town or in the vicinity.
Appreciate the help.. Peter |
If Ribeauville is not to far for you., I highly recomment the Auberge De L'Il(Illhaeusern) 89 71 83 23 you will start with an apertif overlooking the river Ill with weeping willows and swans than, indoors for a meal, you will love.

In Riquewihr: For a special dinner you can go to the Table du Gourmet (tel 03-89-49-09-09 and fax 03-89-89-04-56) closed Tues, Wed. and Thurs lunch offseason. April-Nov they are open Wednesday dinner I think. Though set in a 16th century wine noble's house, the decor of red and black is elegantly modern and the food is haute cuisine prepared from the day's market. Very trendy place for the "beau monde" so you definitely want reservations and to dress smarter here (white tennis shoes and fanny packs best left at the hotel). It will set you back 60-90 euros/pp easily without the wine, but we would gladly go back again. They have a children's menu for 20 euros approx., but IMO is not really a place for young children. As you are definitely here for the "experience", it will take +2 hours. I think our dinner was closer to 3 but we enjoy that. (for what it's worth the red Michelin gives it 3 red fork/knives and one fleurette) Ask for a table upstairs in the main dining area-definitely more intimate than the few tables on the level of the entryway.
We also had a great "regular" meal but I will have to try and find the name for you as it doesn't come to mind right aay. |
Thanks to both of you for your suggestions. Klondike, anything a little less expensive ???

the auberge mentioned above is a must...probably the best restaurant in the area....book way ahead

There are Ooodles of eateries in Riquewihr in all price ranges. One of the best frankfurters mit senf I've every had anywhere was bought at a simple hotdog stand as we passed by. Cheaper eats won't be the problem, it's deciding which one to try!!

We really loved Weinstube Zum Pfifferhus in Ribeauville. It is located at 14 Grand Rue.

I'm with Cigalechante. If you don't mind splurging on a meal, for sure go to Illheusern and the Auberge d'Ill. This is one of the least expensive 3 stars in France. Exceptional service, beautiful surroundings and fabulous food that remains true to its roots. The chef just celebrated his 80th birthday. His son and maybe even grandson join him in the kitchen and his somewhat younger charming brother tends to the front of the house. Fabulous.

We had a wonderful multicourse meal @ Le Sarment d'Or with a bottle of good Gewurz for $64.75 (USD) in Sept '02.
My French family was originally from Riquewihr: I can't imagine their having to leave. |
The best macaroons in Riquewihr are on the left at the top of the hill as you walk up the hill.
I ate so many of them from the various shops that I was unable to eat dinner, but at least now know which shop has the best ones. |
Peter:
Sorry I can not help with the restaurant problem, but if by some chance you wanted to do some wine tasting you might go see Franck Mittnacht. I was there about a year and a half ago with my French vineyard owner friend and he introduced me to Frank, we had a nice wine tasting and purchased a couple bottles of his great wine. Franck Mittnacht Domaine Mittnacht-Klack Vins d'Alsace 8, rue des Tuileries 68340 Riquewihr If you do go, tell him that Randy from Traverse City, Michigan suggested that you stop to see him. I think he might remember me. |
