Alsace or Basel
We are in the process of planning a trip to the Alsace region of France and Southern Germany for next year. I will be sending a separate post on opinions for this itinerary. We plan to spend 4 or 5 days in Alsace at the end of the trip, leaving from Basel for our flight home to the US. Our intial thoughts were to spend 2 days in Strasbourg and then 2 or 3 days in one of the smaller wine villages. Would you spend your last day staying put in Alsace (one of the wine villages) or go to Basel the day before our flight home to US?

Hi W,
>go to Basel the day before our flight home to US< It is always safer to be in the departure city the night before the flight home. ((I)) |
Ira,
Thanks for your input. I've been reading all your great trip reports this week and getting some great tips on places to go and things to do. I will be issuing my preliminary itinerary for input in another post soon. Appreciate your insight. Karen |

There are wine villages around Basel too. Your hotel will probably give you the free transit pass - take the number 10 tram to Ettingen. You can walk among the vineyards and farms, then stop at the Rebstock in Ettingen to taste the local wines, have a light bite (if in the mood) and say hello to Lucy, the cafe owner's sweet Border Collie.
If you take the number 10 tram past Ettingen to Leymen, you will be in Alsace :-) but your free hotel transit pass is valid only until the Ettingen stop. |
Thanks FoFoBT for the tip. Will check out Ettingen.

The airport is the Basel-Colmar-Freiburg airport. There should be some decent transportation between Colmar and the airport.
