Alpujarras - struggling to understand!!

Hi All

We plan on making another trip to Andalucia next year, this time focusing on the East of the region (Granada, Alpujarras etc). I think I know what I am doing for most of it, however I am struggling to fully understand the best way to explore the Alpujarras.

Specifically:

- Is it best to base oneself in the same spot for 4 or 5 days (or however long we stay there)?

- Renting a car is no problem. Is this advised? We would like to do lots of walking while there.

- Which is better in people's opinion, the High or Low Alpujarras?

- Following on from this, any standout villages where it is recommended to stay? Obviously, good restaurants in the vicinity (even if they are basic) would be much appreciated.

Thanks very much!

PG

You might want to check basing yourself in Lanjarón (Puerta de la Alpujarra) or Orgiva (La Perla de la Alpujarra).

I only spent one night there -- in Capileira, which I thought a perfect place for exploring the Poqueira Gorge. There were lots of hiking and horseback riding trails, so a somewhat longer stay would be lovely if those are your priorities. I took a bus from/to Granada. The drive there was terrifying -- but that's probably because the bus driver talked non-stop, with his hands. I thought I would die!

Orgiva is full of hippy type persons. so I did not get the feeling it is quite "authentic" as it used to be.
The best restaurants are usually where the locals eat.

Thanks for the responses!

Capileira looks like a good option.
