Alps hiking trip with 2 base towns

Jump to last reply

My wife and I are avid hikers - in our late 50s, able to walk 8-10 miles per day and not averse to elevation gains and losses. We thought about doing the Tour Du Mont Blanc, but the milage and complexities of arranging this on our own (we like to travel independently) seemed daunting.

Plan B is a hiking trip to the alps with 2 base towns - 4 days each in Murren and Entreves. I've been to Murren on my own and wanted to share that wonderful area with my wife.

Tentative itinerary is:
Fly to Geneva
Transfer to Entreves (how best to do this?)
Considering 4 nights in L'Auberge de la Maison (thoughts on this as our base for day hikes?)
Train to Murren
4 nights in Hotel Edelweiss
Train back to Geneva

My concerns are:
1. Is Entreves a good base for hiking and doing at least a couple of long day hikes on the TMB?
2. The travel from Entreves to Murren looks lengthy. Am I right that it will take 7+ hours?

You can tell from the 2 areas we're looking at what kind of scenery and experience we like. Any thoughts on this or alternative suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Rich
