alps and italian lakes May weather?
Reading some posts on this site, I'm wondering if I've made a mistake to travel to the Engadine and Lake Como during the first week of May ... is the weather dicey at that time of year? Should I change my itinerary (flight already booked)

Hi, Robbydee,
IMO you've picked a great time, so far as the weather is concerned. Of course you may hit a freak storm or two, but you should have should be fine spring weather, and long evenings. Best wishes, Ann |
Hi,
I don't believe you made a mistake going the first week of May. We were in Vel Venosta, Bolzano and Val Gardena, Italy (Dolomites) the last two weeks of April in '05 and we encountered spring like weather then. Chilly at night though. Paul |
I was in Lake Como the second week of May 2006. We had comfortable weather -- not hot, not cold. It was overcast a lot. Wisteria was everywhere. It was lovely.

Lake Como may be OK, it will be cool and gardens won't quite be in bloom, but still prerty, but I think the Engadine will be quite iffy. It will most likely be foggy, as the temps are changing from winter to spring, so the great views may well be obscured, and you could very well have rain in lower elevations. It will probably be muddy in lower elevations and if you go up on cable cars, you will still find a good bit of snow. Early May is really not a great time in the Swiss mountains, it is NOT spring yet. Late May is starting to get better.
You might want to stay in Italy and avoid the mountain areas. |
