Alone in Perugia during Christmas

Hello fellow travelers!

I would love to hear what others have done/would do if in my shoes. I am here in Perugia and the few friends that I have are all going home to family. I will be alone and everything shuts down. Other than midnight mass (which I will attend somewhere) what would you do here in Perugia (without a car)?

Thank you!!!

Don't know Perugia, but if I were in a strange city at Christmas, I might do one of three things:

1. treat myself to a trip to a _different_ strange city, replacing friends and family with adventure. OR
2. have a "staycation" with the books and music and food that I haven't the time for in my ordinary life.
3. Find a place to volunteer, even for the day, at a hospice or nursing home or orphanage.
4. Find out which students at the university are in the same boat and either invite them or join them for a meal or treat.

In any case, I would plan and book a special meal for myself at a restaurant and lay in enough suppllies that I would be well fixed until commerce resumes. And if I couldn't afford that, I would try to remember the young couple from Nazareth, friendless and homeless travelers in Bethlehem so long ago.

Could you sign up to help with a soup kitchen / charity type Christmas lunch? You could help prepare the food and serve it.

Or put a sign up at the place you are studying to see if anyone else is in the same boat?

Maybe get the train to somewhere where things will be open - Rome or Paris?

Hope things turn out well for you.

Kristi,

I was once in your situtaion, not in Perugia, but in New York. All my friends (and room-mates!) left to be with family, but I had a job and needed to work right through Christmas Eve. I woke up Christmas morning and didn't know quite what to do. The time difference made it too early to call any family. I decided I might as well get some chores done, so I gathered my laundry and took it a laundromat -- which of course was closed.

It was standing outside that laundromat in the cold that I suddenly had one of the happiest realizations of my life. I suddenly realized what a "HOLIDAY" could be.

I hurried home, tossed away the laundry, made hot chocolate, found a book, and relaxed with freedom in my heart. I made a little lunch, I went for a walk. I think maybe I went to a movie. All I remember is that I had the whole day to do anything I wanted to do. it was a real holiday -- from everything!

I've never forgotten that happy Christmas, and it changed forever the way I look at Christmas. While other people run themselves ragged or encase themselves in armor against all possible pain and disappointement, I think: "How great! Everything will be shut!" You can't get any chores done on Christmas. if all your relatives are far away at 6am your time, what can you do except relax?

Learn the true meaning of a holiday and relax. Perugia is a great place to lay in the fixings for hot chocolate. Gather up your favorite books. if the weather is crisp and clear, get out for some exercise. Anybody you pass will give you a smile.

Being alone isn't as bad as you imagine.
