Almalfi to Florence-best travel route

Does anyone knwo the best way to get from Almalfi Coast to Florence? Thanks.

If interest in rail, best to take bus or boat from Amalfi towns to Salerno, which has express trains direct to Florence, probably about three hours from Salerno. Or you could go to Sorrentio by bus or boat and then the CircumVesuviana commuter train to Naples Centrale station, then fast trains direct to Florence. At some times it may be faster to train to Rome and change there from either Sorrento or Salerno. I'm sure Salerno route is quicker. If by car just head over to Salerno area and catch the autostrada via Rome to Florence. If training it Eurostar Italia trains are the fastest, but cost about $15 more than IC, Inter-city, trains. ES trains require reservations, IC don't but they're advised, especially in 2nd class. Fares are dirt cheap for Europe (www.renitalia.con; Italian rail website has schedules, fares and online purchases. Easier to use German Rail website (www.bahn.de) has schedules for all of Europe, including Italy, but not fares outside of Germany. All ES trains are, in theory, non-smoking, IC trains i don't think are yet but will be soon.

Hi jas,

Good advice from PalQ.

Train schedules are at www.trenitalia.com/en.

Whether to leave from Salerno or Sorrento depends on which town you will be in, as you will have to take the Coast Road to the train station.

We hired a limo to take us from Praiano (near Positano) to Naples train station. About 1 hr, 90E.

We took the hydrafoil from Sorrento to Naples and then the train from Naples to Florence. Don't know if this was the best way, but it worked well for us.

Can someone please make clear to me whether taking the Circumversuviana from Sorrento takes you to the same station from which you can catch an ES or ES -class train to Florence? Is the connection an upstairs-downstairs sort of thing or ....? How much time between trains should I allow?

Hi Cassandra,

The Circumvesuviana is in the same building - underground floor.

There is a map of the station at

You can always ask, "Dove e Trenitalia, per favore?". It's not grammatical, but it worked.
