Almalfi coast or Isle of Capri?
 

I am given a choice on a one day stop in Naples through a cruise ship. I actually have a all day tour booked for Almalfi Coast, stopping in Postiano for Lunch, and other sightseeing along the way. Someone said I should not miss the isle of Capri blue grotto etc. I cannot do both, which would you do? This is my frist time in Italy, not sure when I will return. I am torn between the 2 now. Any thoughts? I heard in late October many business will be closed for holiday along the Almalfi coast. I so had my heart set on that now I am second guessing. Thanks.

Well first of all you cannot count on the Blue Grotto being open - it is closed many days, at least part of the time, when the sea is choppy - the entrance is very small and often the rowboats cannot slip in and out. Now I really enjoy Capri but I am going to recommend you stick with your plan - there is gorgeous scenery on both the coast and the island - in some ways they are similar - dramatic views, cliffs, gorgeous sea, lovely vegetation. To get back and forth to Capri is going to take some time and there are times when some hydrofoils are cancelled. So if you have a private tour booked for the coast I think you will really enjoy the drive and the stop in Positano for lunch. Some businesses may be closed (and they could be in Capri as well) but the scenery will still be available for viewing!

Definitely stick with the Amalfi Coast tour. As suec1 mentioned, getting to Capri might be difficult or impossible. Also, since it's small, hoards of cruise tourists all arriving at the same time have a big impact. Not good.

Where exactly does your private tour of the coast go? Positano isn't really half way. Personally, I would want to go at least as far as Amalfi before heading back.

If you have one day there I would definitely tour Pompeii - definitely way more fascinating that the towns on the Amalfi coast (beach resorts sort of off season) and Capri - a more upscale ditto. (At that time of year your chances of getting into the Blue Grotto are probably 50/50 - it can be reached only if the sea is completely flat.

yes Pomepei is included in our tour it is a private tour not associated with the ship at all. Thanks I shall stick with my plan. I feel better now. Thank-you so much.

We recently spent a week at the Amalfi Coast and particularly loved Positano, we had two nights there. I loved the beautiful weather, the views were breathtaking and the small town is so quaint. Very enjoyable wandering around the shops and villas there. The Amalfi Coast has some of the most dramatic scenery in the world. We also spent 3 nights in Sorrento but the weather turned unfortunately and did not enjoy it as much there. We could not go to Capri because of the weather, so you might like to keep that in mind. Enjoy - its a beautiful part of the world!

Stick to the Amalfi Coast. You'll see more and be able to do more, as with Capri, weather dictates too much what you are able to do, and at that time of year, the weather just is too unpredictable.

dreamweaver, I stuck to the Amalfi coast it was gorgeous. I also loved Positano what a fabulous place. We had sun, and we ate lunch on the beach with a glass of wine. What more could one ask for? It was wonderful and a moment in time and memories I shall always cherish!! I loved Rome secondly, and as your comment with Sorrento Venice was rainy, flooded, foggy etc. I felt less impressed not sure if the weather had the effect on us. I had dreamed of Venice always so it was a let down due to the time of year. Sorrento was sunny but still no where near as dramatic as Positano. I agree---
