Joanne et al,

The yellow fields (millions of them) in Germany and France are rape fields. Beautiful in May.

Interesting that most city folks asked could not answer what the crop was. It took country folk to give the right answer.

As for lavender . . . there is a lady that has a lavender farm (hundreds of different kinds of lavender) about 40 miles South West of Melbourne, Australia. If anyone wants to see/smell/experience 'lavender' - this is the creme de la creme.

Thank you for your response. We had thought they looked like mustard greens, which grow wild in fields here in California, and which I believe are either the same or closely related to rape.

The yellow fields were pretty, but prefered the sunflowers in Spain and the beautiful red poppies in Italy and France. But most of all wished we had been in France during the lavender season.

Thanks again for all who tried to solve our mystery. Joanne

Another great place for lavender is the county of Norfolk in England. Huge fields with the most beautiful scent imaginable. (I know, not in France, but just a point of info.)
