All museums in Italy Closed on May 21?
There is going to be a civil servants strike in Italy on May 21 (www.seekitaly.com). According to the folks at seekitaly (I emailed to ask them) this means that all state run museums will be closed - state run museums means the uffizi, the accademia etc. . . (most of the biggies). Anybody been in Italy during a civil servants strike and can provide info about what, if anything, is open?

I will be in Italy at that time too. Today I checked the website you refer to and the Alitalia strike set for the 17th is cancelled. I have heard that rail strikes are often called a day ahead of time and that strikes are often cancelled or unpredictable. I'm supposed to be on a train that day (21st) and am planning to have a back-up plan just in case there really is the strike and I have to rent a car instead. I suggest you make a back-up plan in case museums are closed where you are. Sounds like it also isn't clear what cities will be affected.

Jean: It's all very unpredictable I agree! We are coming up with a back-up plan but it is hard to plan when so little is known. For example, if all municipal museums are closed, that means pretty much all of them in Florence (where we will be). But I am sure we will find plenty to do. Should be an experience, which is, after all what travel is all about! good luck with your trip!

I'm betting, even if there is a strike of civil servants, it might only be for a certain period of time. But we'll see, and I think you're right, the sttitude we need is not anxiety but adventure.

Ivy, consider taking a walking tour that day perhaps. I've gone with Florence Walks and can recommend them; the "original Florence tour" is a very enjoyable and informative tour. http://www.artviva.com/
I'm in the same predicament-I'll be in Rome that day (apparently with 400,000 protestors to deal with too). So I'll be taking a few walking tours. I'm assuming churches of course WILL be open.
