Alitalia - Good or Bad?
We plan to fly to Rome in September and had intended to use Alitalia. Recently we heard some negative comments about Alitalia and are considering changing to US Airways. Would Ppreciate hearing from anyone who has had experience with Alitalia.

I answer questions in the Cheap Flight Forum in www.eurotrip.com. Have learned a great deal and just picked up the following information from a fellow traveler who has longed in over 300,000 miles. He did not metion Alitalia thought. His favorites for flying to Europe are Iceland Air (www.icelandair.is) you get 2 free nights at the Sheraton in Iceland and free air if you fly into Amsterdam for a Rt fare of $648, Besides icelandair he recommends KLM, British Airways, Lufthansa (best on time record) and Swiss air.
Airlines to avoid on international flights are: Avianca, Lacsa, Pia East West, Indian Airlines, Southewest Airlines, Air Lanka, ACES, Northwest, American, Sabena, Air France, Delta and United. He votes KLM for best service /best looking attendants, British Airways for best food. Best International Airport is Schiphol in Amsterdam. Worst on time records are Northwest and American

I flew Alitalia from J.F.K. New York to Rome and I found it a very comfortable flight. The service was good, too. I suppose some people have had bad experiences with most airlines, but I have also had very good service to Europe from Delta and with American on two occasions. However, last year I flew American from Chicago to London and was delayed in Chicago for give hours. I flew Air France to Paris in 94 and was also delayed in New York for four hours.

Have flown many miles on Alitalia--both from the states to Italy and within Europe. One of the best ways to get to Tuscany (and we go often) is British to Heathrow then Alitalia to Pisa. I'm sure everyone has had his share of bad flights--I certainly could negate everything the fellow who ranked the airlines says. Delays are primarily caused by weather. I think SWA has one of the best on time/safety records ever, so what is the criticism of it?? I would vote Swiss Air the best to get to Europe, but the flight's not the most important part! Alitalia absolutely over U.S. Air!!

Just returned from a trip to Italy and flew Alitalia JFK to Rome and returned via Alitalia/Continental to Newark. We had no problem with either flight, found the crew to be accommodating, and the flight to be as comfortable as you can get on an 8 hour flight. The Alitalia leg is not smoke free, there is a smoking area in the rear of the plane. However, if you are on the Continental leg of Alitalia (they're partners) the flight is smoke free.

We've flown Alitalia from Johannesburg, South Africa (economy and business [Magnifica] class) to Rome, as well as from Rome to New York. Excellent food, excellent service and spot-on with their departure and arrival times. The legroom in economy class is more than on other airlines (not my imagination, or is it?). Also, don't forget to applaud the captain when you have arrived at your destination!!

We flew on Alitalia non-stop LAX to Milan and on to Rome. A lot of hours in the air! Plane was a new MD1100 (I think that's the number) and had good leg room. Better than old 747s. We nearly died from smoke! There were smoking areas in first class and in the back, but the problem was the crew!!! They chain-smoked the whole way. I will never go on a smoking flight again!
