Alistair Horne's Latest History of France
August 23 saw the publication in the US of Alistair Horne's latest history and reviewed with praise in the Wall Street Journal of the same date.
"La Belle France: A Short History" was originally published in the UK with the title "Friend or Foe: An Anglo-Saxon History of France". Any reader enthralled as I was with his previous "Seven Ages of Paris" should be on the lookout for this.

Shane, you're right. His history of Verdun is magnificent.
This latest book was reviewed in The Times Literary Supplement on 11 February 2005, in case anyone is a subscriber. The summary: "... he tells his story vigorously, with vivid anecdotes, well-chosen quotations and evocative detail, supported by forty-nine illustrations."
Sounds wonderful.
