ALGARVE - BEST PLACE TO STAY

Can anyone give me their views on the best area/ place to stay for a 7 days visit to the Algarve in June.
We would like to be near a beach, love Portuguese food and will have a car to visit various places in the Algarve area.
Also recommendations on what to see/visit will also be appreciated !

Tavira seems a nice town to base in. We decided to do that in March next, picking up a car at Faro.

Another vote for Tavira, interesting buildings, good beach but you have to catch a boat to it. But it is out in the east, away from other towns. A good base for visiting parts of the Alentejo and not too many golf courses.

Another vote for Tavira. Have been there many times. Quieter and more authentic than the western part of the Algarve. Lagos is nice, too.

It depends on what you're looking for on the Algarve. Tavira is to the east of Faro and therefore quite a way from the rest of the main towns/resorts along the coast. They are all on the sea along the coast (obviously) and the bulk of the tourists head to the west of Faro.

To avoid too long in the car, maybe you'd want to stay mid way to the west of faro, somewhere like

ooopps, pressed "enter" too soon.

...somewhere like Albufeira, but although it won't be full on high season, it will be busy. Conversely this does give you a greater choice of hotels, restaurants etc. The coast road does get busy and although Tavira is nice, I wouldn't want to schlep up and down the road in the summer through lots of slow traffic. The western end of the Algarve is lovely and the trip along to Cabo de Sao Vicente (Cape St Vincent) is well worth the effort to get there, but from Tavira? Maybe not so much.

My choice would be maybe Carvoeiro, not too manic, fairly central and a great place.

Carvoeiro is nice, too. But no way I would ever stay in Albufeira, not even for free!

In June you can easily drive Tavira-Cabo São Vicente in three hours along the N125. It makes for a nice daytrip which we do every year. Our lunch stop is usually in the Villa Medici in Carvoeiro.

we loved Tavira as it is really a town...not built for tourists...lovely place...but as pointed out not central. We also stayed near Albuferia and what a tacky tourist trap town. Our hotel was outside enough and in beautiful surroundings but yikes that town was ugly.

I liked Portimao, very much a real town. The river and the villages and the wetlands to the west all make for great birdwatching, bog snorkling and the like, but fewer foreign tourist facilities.

Hire a bike and follow the bike path a bit.

Never been to Tavira but heard its fantastic. We loved Lagos and loved Albuferia even more. Lagos is more for the refined (and we aint refined).

Sorry to add onto your thread but our family are planning a trip to the Algarve over Christmas. Would Tavira be the best place to actually spend Christmas or one of the other towns suggested? Looking for places open to eat on Christmas Day. We are not resort all inclusive people. Thanks so much!

I might ensure that your hotel has a heated pool as well as an outdoor pool, but yes Tavira is a real possible. You might also consider Faro itself but stay in the centre.
