Albi France the Toulouse Lautrec Museum
We will be traveling from the dordogne area (Gremat) on a Sun or Mon in the end of June to see the Toulous Latrec museum in Albi and spending the day doing so . I am aware that most shops will not be open on either day so we are looking for alternatives for spending the day. Has anyone been there and what else should we plan to see on the way down or back or perhaps in Albi.

I'm certainly no expert on Albi but on our visit there, we were impressed by the cathedral which is right next to the Lautrec museum. Its a unique, fortress like structure with interesting design features both inside and out. It still stands out in my memory and has fostered an interest in the Albigensian Crusades, Cathars and the "Wars of Religion". Make sure of the opening hours for the museum before your visit.

Do you mean Gramat? That's not in the Dordogne; it's in Quercy. Anyway, Albi's a lovely town. I've been there many times, and the Toulouse Lautrec museum is right there next to the fabulous cathedral. It won't take up more than about 45 minutes or an hour of your time, as it's rather small. Supposedly, Toulouse Lautrec's house isn't far from the cathedral (there's a sign outside it that tells you to head in X direction to find it), but even after countless visits there, we never located it. Let us know if you do.
Other places to visit on the way or the way back include Figeac, Cordes-sur-Ciel, St-Antonin-Oble-Val, St-Cirq-Lapopie, the caves at Peche-Merle, Castelnaud-le-Montmiral, and Villefranche de Rouerge.

St Cirq picked all my favorite spots between the Dordogne & Albi. Add Bruniquel to the list too. Get hold of a copy of the Michelin Green Guide to the Languedoc, look up St Antonin Noble Val, and follow the scenic drive # 1 (in my 2001 edition) around the Gorges de l'Aveyron - which passes through St Antonin & Bruniquel. St Antonin has a very nice farmer's market on Sunday morning.
Shops may open Monday afternoon - around 2:30 or 3.

It's France. Restaurants/bistros/brasseries will be open, not all of them, but enough of a choice that you won't starve. I've been in Albi on a Sunday on several occasions and had no problem finding food.

We were in Albi on, of all days, Mother's Day Sunday and we still found a place to eat arriving without reservations, although not our 1st choice!! You should have no problem unless your Sunday is also Mother's Day
