Alba to Nice: too far for a day trip?
Hi All:

We'll be spending four days in Italy's Piedmonte region, and thought that a day trip to France would be fun. Any Fodorites know how far that drive might be? We have a car. Or an alternate France destination that's pretty/interesting that happens to be closer to the Italian border? Grazie Amici!

Hi Kris. I don't know how far the drive from Alba to Nice is but an alternate destination in France would be Menton, which is right across the Italian/French border. I like Menton a lot but, if you think you'd have enough time, I'd recommend Nice instead.

The direct drive from Alba to Nice (thru Cuneo) takes about 2 1/2 hours. If you return thru San Remo and Savona, this will take you some 3 1/2 hours. You tell me if Nice is worth 6 ours driving!

Thanks Capo and Fred.

Menton does look beautiful. We may try that. Probably not worth the 6 hours to Nice and back. Maybe we'll look for a nice town inland, which will be closer.

We stayed in Cioccaro di Penango (just north of Asti and Alba) this summer and then upon leaving, headed toward the French Riviera. We stayed in Eze. I would not suggest attempting a day-trip to France, even to Menton, unless you want to spend most of the day in the car. Stay in Piedmont and soak in more of the location--try a wine tasting at Prunotto in Alba.
