Alas, only 2 days in Rome
 

Experienced travellers: if you had only 2 days in Rome, what would you do? We are spending 7 days in Tuscany, but we are arriving and leaving out of Rome.

I'd feel cheated with only 2 days in Rome and would spend the entire time in Tuscany.

But perhaps you are asking about what sights to see? Your question is not clear. If you do intend on seeing Rome in 2 days it would help for you to say what you're interested in. Here's a list I just put on another thread. Your best bet is to consult a guidebook to find things that interest you.

Campo dei Fiori for breakfast and the morning market
Walk around Trastevere
Pantheon

Have you been to Rome before? If not I would spend them doing a combo of:

1 day at Vatican
1 day doing the Coloseum and Forum
1 day enjoying the piazzas around Piazza Navona, Campo di Fiori, Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon and drinking wine :)

For me, I would choose the things I could only do in Rome (or Vatican City). That would be the Colosseum/Forum/Palantine Hill, Pantheon, Vatican/St. Peters & the Borghese. You'll probably visit markets, drink wine and stroll through piazzas in Tuscany.

I agree with artsbabe completely..and if you aren't "into" some of those places..just hang out in the city...

May I suggest that in addition to all of the above helpful lists from knowledgable Fodorite "Roma lovers", you may want to add a stroll through what was the Roman ghetto and take a fairly quick tour of the handsome sinagoga...don't be put off by the armed guards around the building..just today's reality. While in the ghetto, I further suggest a lunch at mearby Al Pompiere or Piperno, for an "authentic" meal of popular "Roman Jewish" foods (fried artichokes, zucchini flowers, and cod baked in a tomato sauce)....see these links:

The Trastevere ("across the Tiber") section is just across the bridge from the ghetto, and it once housed parts of the old ghetto also. A walk through would be pleasantly colorful.

Best wishes for the all-too-quick visit...but I'm sure you'll manage to make the most of it, and it will tantalize you enough to soon return!.

I am unclear just how long you will be in Rome.

What time do expect to be checked into Rome hotel on your first day?

When do you leave for Tuscany?

When do you arrive back in Rome? For how long before you need to leave to return to airport?

The answers make a huge difference? Also what are your interest (see andreinne's post)? We can also give you an idea of how long you'll need to see the different tourists sites you choose.
