Akrotiri Tour?
Hi, all! During a stay in Santorini, I want to get a car for one day to travel inland from Oia, stopping at villages along the way to Akrotiri -- somewhat as tripplanner001 did using taxis and public transportation. I assumed my group of four would need a guide for Akrotiri, but I'm not finding any available online for just the archeological site. Do I need to book a guide for Akrotiri, or is there a decent self-guided option or perhaps guides available on site? (We aren't intense archeology buffs but we do enjoy context!) All advice is welcome.

When I went, I had been assured that there would be guides on site, but there weren't, perhaps because I got there late in the day. I used an audioguide, which I found very informative.
It's a fascinating site -- enjoy! |
It's a great site, but I also don't remember any guides being available. I took the bus, very easy, as it stops right in front of the site.

There were a few guides on site when we arrived at Akrotiri. You don't book them in advance. There was one guide who had several people who wanted to take her tour, but she needed a few more people to keep the cost down. We told her to sign us up but that still wasn't enough people. She tried to get other tourists to join us, but no one was interested. And the people who had already committed verbally decided the price was too high; also, she only accepted cash, and there were people who didn't have cash, so anyways, the group dwindled down to almost nothing. So we didn't go with her, and by then, the other guides had left. So I don't think this is a reliable way to find a guide. Seems to be hit or miss. We enjoyed the site without a guide, and there are a few plaques with descriptions.
I don't remember seeing a place where audioguides were available. |
Thanks, all! I think for now I'll plan to wing it!

Hi, kja! How and where did you get an audioguide? After fruitlessly searching for an on-site human to book, I think an audioguide is the best option!

It was available on site at the time, or at least that's how I remember it. I did not get an audioguide ahead of time. I think there's also informative signage scattered among the ruins. Sorry I can't be more specific!
