Aix hotel
 

We are ready to leave for Provence in 6 days. I was searching various forums for some information and happened upon a review of a lodging which had terrible reviews on another site. Has anyone (since this is a hotel in Rick's guidebook for Provence) has any good or bad experiences with Hotel le Manoir in Aix. Possibly at this point, I could still find another hotel, but since we will be there for 6 nights--would like some info.

We stayed at Le Manoir a few years ago. It was OK. The cloister and other publis areas were pretty, the location was great, and it was nice to have parking. The hallways and the room were a little, um, in need of some TLC, but OK. Front desk staff not so great. I had the feeling that the place was not particularly well-run.

However, the price was really good.

I will also say that we were coming directly from the Mas de Carassins in St. Remy and were therefore very spoiled at that point.

If I go back to Aix, I would probably spend a bit more money and stay at the sort of medieval place just off the Cours Mirabeau whose name I can't remember.

We stayed 3 nights last October at the Hotel Cardinal in Aix and enjoyed our stay. You don't say what your price range is, but we had a large suite in the annex of the hotel that included a sitting area with sofa and a couple chairs grouped around a fireplace and a nice sized tv; at the other side of the room was the bed. There was also a kitchenette and a dining table. The bathroom was small but updated and quite nice. We felt the room rate of around 115 Euros was very reasonable. The annex was about a block from the main hotel, so we didn't interact too much with staff. We enjoyed our stay.

My bad experience with Le Manoir was booking. Got a crusty email saying early January was too early to accept reservations. Try back in February. When I inquired in early February, my dates - for one room - were already booked.

I stayed at the Manoir. Everything was fine especially that they have their own car park but breakfast in the cloisters left much to be desired. I'd eat out. But the rates were not expensive.

I've stayed at Quatre Dauphines around the corner from the Cardinal, which is charming but very vertical with no elevator. I've stayed at the Roi Rene, which is a luxury business hotel with no soul.

I have resolved to stay at the Cardinal next time. The location is unbeatable. The street is where MFK Fisher lived, if I remember correctly, and the idea of little Cezanne and little Victor Hugo walking along it on their way to school is intriquing.

Sorry about le Manoir. It is interesting from the street.

I have stayed at the St. Christophe several times and was very happy. It is right next to the tourist bureau and across the street from the Cours Mirabeau. Last year it was full so stayed at the Grand Hotel Negre Coste which is right in the middle of the Cours Mirabeau. I think Grand is a bit of a misnomer but the location is unbeatable.
