I would check the information from your airlines, I would guess 2 hours prior. But also check what time the airport opens as I think its 5am so no point in getting their before that.
Check out www.justairports.com for a car service. Its generally cheaper than using a black cab.
The tubes dont open early enough to get you there. Where are you staying...if you can get to Paddington station the Heathrow Express may be open in time...but check the prices between the car service above and the HEX because with the hassel it may be worth it just to book the direct car service.

Heathrow is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week, so that is not a problem.
They recommend you check in at least two hours before departure for short haul flights. Even if you can check in on line before hand you need to be there at least an hour before hand to check any bags and pass through security.
Loading often starts 45 minutes before departure so planes don't lose their slots.
How you get that at that time of day depends on where you are staying.

OK, Heathrow may be open (ie you can walk in) but the check-in desks at T5 when we flew to Berlin didnt open until 5am I believe...so we were there 30 mins earlier at 4:30am (to meet the 2 hours for our flight approx) and we had to stand there and wait. No point in showing up 2 hours before your flight if you cant check in until 1.5 hours before!
