AIrline costs to Italy

Why are the flights so cheap coming out of JFK? For example for the same dates this summer ie 7/31-8/22 if we fly Boston to Rome via Alitalia the cost for 4 of us is about 4600. If we fly out of JFK the cost is about 2100.

It doesnt make sense to me - so I am sure someone on this forum can give me a good explanation.

Thanks in advance

Joanne

Maybe it's a mistake, as airlines do make mistakes from time to time. If you want those flights, I'd buy them right now. They probably won't be there tomorrow.

Two riddles that will never be solved: The meaning of life, and air fare pricing.

If this discrepancy persists - how much does it cost you to get to NY and back?

mr_compass Jan 2nd, 2007 04:03 PM

I don't think it was a mistake,I also got the super cheap ticket price to Germany in the summer on Alitalia.(I was able to get the fare for a couple of days) It was also effective from Newark liberty airport. Unless they were trying to fill the planes and get the money early ?

I'm glad you got the cheap airfare (that's one of my favorite things :) ), but Alitalia has made some whopper mistake fares over the years and this might be one, if not so large as some errors. So I still say - take advantage now if you want it!

Hi-I saw these fares too from JKF. They actually had the same fares for earlier in the month too--(I was looking at JFK to Rome R/T leaving in late June and returning July 18 for 545 total.) Unfortunately, in the 15 minutes that I was consulting w/ my husband, the fares doubled! I figure the fares were either a mistake, or they sold out very quickly... did you end up booking??

Update--I did some more searching and found the cheap fares on Expedia--bought R/T JFK to Rome for 545 per person total, leaving June 30, returning July 18! I'm really happy with these fares, even though I'll have to find a way from Boston to NY!

Hi didi,

It could have somethiing to do with size of market and competition.

Are these the flights with a layover in Milan or are you finding something fantastic that I'm missing?

kismetchimera Jan 3rd, 2007 04:36 AM

didi, you are Lucky..I wished that I could find these fantastic fares.

I just hope those here that are booking Alitalia know about their financial situation. A lot can happne between now and summer, and I'm telling anyone not to book. Just to understand it's a financially unstable and chronic unprofitable airline that the Italian government is trying to sell its stakes.

I just don't want someone to book now, then starting to read the news report and get themselves scared from now till when.

didi_614 Jan 3rd, 2007 05:19 AM

Thanks to everyone that responded. We actually did not book yet- our problem is that we too are unsure of the Alitalia issues and would hate to pay for tickets and then not be able to fly or worse lose our money. I am going to follow up with an agent we know who does alot with Alitalia.

My concern is that my kids have never flown and we are afraid to do connections with them. We feel that a non stop might work out better for us. So I will keep on searching. Hopefully I will get lucky to find another deal.

Thanks for all the comments.

In my case, I was able to get the fare without any layover in Milan. (about 1 1/2 hours inbound)Since it was an open jaw, into Frankfurt and out of Berlin, I was even more pleased. the syetem gave me a couple options when booking. I am willing to take a chance, with Alitalia might have some money issues. At the regular rate with taxes,I would not be able to get four people to Europe in the summer.

rkkwan Jan 3rd, 2007 06:21 AM

mr_compass - You lost me there. You're flying Newark to Germany on Alitalia, right? Since Alitalia doesn't fly non-stop on those routes, you must be switching planes somewhere.

mr_compass Jan 3rd, 2007 11:38 AM

We are flying into Milan with the change over to Frankfurt. Sorry if I confussed you, I stated in the first sentence that we were going into Milan. I guess I should have said with a minium layover to switch planes.
