I know many of the travelers that post on Fodor's are like to make their travel arrangements independently from a tour company, but with the airfare prices as high as they are, I think going with a package can be the most cost effective option. My family is going to London in June, and we found a 6 day package for $899 per person. We are driving 4 hours to Dulles to economize even further.

I feel guilty after reading these replies. My wife and I booked a direct flight out of newark, NJ to FCO for 375 per person round trip via continental.
Don't feel guilty. There were plenty of folks on this thread telling folks to be patient and wait it out. Some people insist on buying early. While this can save money, I don't think it will this year. I think the best deals are going to be had within 2 to 3 months out, even as late as 2 weeks out.

We live in Columbus. We found airfair MUCH cheaper if we flew out of Toronto on Air Canada. I know, I know, its a bit of a drive (around 5 hours) but we saved at least $2500 and get to spend a night in Toronto, a cool city itself. you might look into it.

The first time I went to Italy was in 2004 and I paid $675 round trip from Chicago to Florence. I traveled 3 times that year to Italy and did not pay more than $850 a ticket each time. The last time I went was in 2006 and paid $1400 round trip but it was from Oregon and I didnt feel so bad paying that much since it was a long trip and it was Christmas time, now living in Chicago I cant find flights for $675 anymore...the taxes/fees alone are $300!! I have been looking to go back but the prices for flight tickets are outrageous! Then the exchange rate is outrageous as well! How does anyone afford it anymore? But like numerous people have mentioned...patience and constant checking is the key!

travelinfool, you should consider flying from Chicago to NY and then NY to Italy. At the rates they're featuring right now for outward travel thru' May and returns in June, you'd easily pay $675 or less, including your RT flight Chicago/NY.

my husband and i just booked our flight last week:
chicago to rome, non-stop roundtrip for $680 per person on orbitz flying alitalia at the end of may 2009. i checked www.farecast.com to see what the odds were of the airfare dropping below $680 before we booked. it said 51% chance the fare will go up, 49% it would go down. that wasnt helpful at all, so we booked b/c when we were looking before, we were finding tickets for around $1300. so, we booked last tuesday night and have been monitoring the fare since then. i was soooo frustrated on saturday morning (3/14/09) when our exact flight, itinerary everything dropped from $680 to $440 per person!!! we booked through orbitz b/c of the "price assurance" but in order for that to go into affect, someone needs to book the exact same itinerary as us at a lower price for us to get any money back. nobody booked at the $440 rate, so as of right now, $680 is the lowest booked fare for chicago to rome for our travel dates. anyways....i think u should be able to find a really good deal for june in this economy....monitor fares for a week to see the price fluctuation at different times and days of the week. and make sure u clear your cookies on your computer so the search engine doesnt keep showing you the same prices. good luck and happy travels!

bardo,
Good question.
My friends just booked JFK/MXP for 6/17-7/7 at $879 on Orbitz b/c of the voucher guarantee. I've also wondered how to verify other bookings, or not.
This was the lowest fare they found in more than a month of searching.
