There is a limit to how much airlines can reduce capacity before they begin to lose their valuable airport gate concessions. There are so many factors involved in airline ticket pricing that we always just set a price that is OK with us. If tickets get down to that price, we buy. If they don't, we go someplace else on our vacation--we have a long list of places we want to visit, so we've never had a problem coming up with wonderful alternative destinations.
2 years ago we wanted to visit the Alps--but ticket prices were persistently in the $1,200 range. We ended up flying to Alaska for $600.

Lulubelle,
Kudos to you for taking the kids along. We've been taking my daughter to Europe since she was 6, and she has learned SO much. Most kids rise to the occasion.
I second (or third) the Aer Lingus recommnedation. You can fly into Dublin pretty cheap, and take Ryanair to France.

Lulu-- You wish to take three kids (all under the age of 6), hubby, and nanny to France for a mere week and are complaining about costs? maybe the nanny can chip in some money and help you out?
Does it have to be France? This plan and associated expenses for just a week sounds dumb beyond belief....

As they say, it's my party! We'll be in France 10 days but in our rental house a week. I blame lame American vacation culture for lack of time and my husband works for Fannie Mae and does not want to take too much time during this period of instability. I have a small PR firm too and can't be out of pocket for very long.
I'm not complaining per se but shocked each ticket is so expensive I flew biz class to Paris last June from DC for work on AF and it was $2,000.
Nanny is obviously not going to chip in but she may be left at home. My thinking was she gets paid no matter (a lot less than the plane ticket though, of course!) so let's take her for extra help and on the ground sitter we trust and incur no additional cost.
I do like the Dublin switch Ryanair option. That way maybe we can skip the Paris/TGV leg and fare which will save money.
We've thought about alternatives but honestly this is the location I have been fantasizing about...next year for my husband's 40th it will be Iceland or Nova Scotia. Much less expensive I hope!

I've always been able to find a flight between $650-$850 to Europe in June, even when prices were $1400. They usually do drop. But you have to be watching it like a hawk -EVERY day! Good luck and have an amazing trip.

Try http://airfare.com/. I just purchased a R/T SFO-CDG for $999--Kayak is offering similar itineraries for $1160 and up. I am leaving in early May, which probably makes a difference. However, when going to AA own site, the same itinerary cost a couple hundred dollars more. The ticket is non-refundable and any exchange will include a very stiff fee.

Hi Lulu. I just received a notice that you can fly to Barcelona, Spain for $914 tax and all from NY. I live in CO and we've been wanting this kind of deal for us to fly our family of 6 out to Spain Aug 3. Try Kayak and see what it yields for you. You have to travel by the end of July...Hope this works if you haven't booked yet. Have a great time!
