Airfare to Munich May 2009

Hi,

I am planning a trip to Munich in late May 2009 and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or tricks about when the best time to purchase airfare would be?

I am leaving from Boston and would like a direct flight, but as of 1/15 the ticket price is $1335 per person.

Any thoughts?

metre,

It is impossible to predict airfare changes, but I regularly check Kayak.com with my fingers crossed.

I'm planning a trip to Italy in May and have held off buying airfare in hopes that the price will come down soon. I will not wait any later than March though to make my purchase.

Good luck!

Direct flights for a specific time during high season are a very costly proposition. Not surprised at all at the $1300+ price you are getting. Take the requirements down a couple of nothes and you will slice quite a chunk out of that estimate, i.e. fly Virgin Airlines connecting in London at $900. Still not cheap, but then again, late May is High Season for that route.

meter;

$811 on United and Lufthansa for May 13 - 27.

Is that good enough or do you have specific dates in mind?

Sounds a little high, yet, metre. For instance, we paid $661 inc all taxes, fees, etc to go DFW-LHR (Dallas to London).

I have noticed that Lufthansa does have good fares as Aramis says. I usually fly AA and right now they show $856, BOS-MUC, changing in LHR. Of course, I'd stay away from a connecting flight if I could get a direct.

I'd wait a while and see. I just bought our tix yesterday for a March 2009 flight.

Check US Air's website.......terrific May fares to Europe (eg, Cincinnati to London or Paris - just $599 including taxes as of last night). Good luck!

Those US Airways fares have already gone up, it would seem! I saw that yesterday too, and a flight from LAX to Amsterdam was $641 all in for late June. I couldn't believe my eyes! But today I checked it again, and it was over $1300.

I too was looking to get to Munich, but at just over $100, I could fly with Lufthansa from Amsterdam direct. And a flight for less than $700 from the west coast at that time of year is too good to ignore.

My point is, don't rule out flying through another city like the other posters have said. If you can find a good deal to Europe, chances are, you can get to Munich via either plane or train and still save yourself money in the long run.

Hi metre; Try aerlingus.com You may be able to get a flight for about $650US thru Dublin. I know you wanted a direct flight, but this seems to be a good price. Connecting in Dublin is much easier that London or Paris. ENJOY Iris

I think for late May you can watch and wait until April 1 at the latest. From my experience fares yoyo up and down. What you see on US AIR right now will not go any higher but most likely will come down. I have had the best luck booking 6-8 weeks before departure. When you see a fare that you like, grab it.

Aer Lingus has good rates but does not have connections to Munich via DUB.

For a dummy reservation 5/24 - 6/5 you will get a quote of $592 -- but to Frankfurt, not to Munich.

Frankfurt airport has its own railway station with high speed trains to Munich.

This will be much more inconvenient than a non-stop to Munich, but you will save a lot compared with your $1335 pP.

Hi metre; Actually Aerlingus.com has a direct flight on May21, Dublin to Munich. However, the departure time of 4:30pm and arrival time of 7:55pm may not be convienent. But the price from Boston is very reasonable. On line you would have to book each 'leg' seperatly. But you could call them in the US at 516-6224000 and inquire. ENJOY Iris

Good point, Iris.

I knew that they have flights DUB-MUC but thought connection time from BOS would be too short (instead of really long) because you can't book BOS-DUB-MUC online.

Yet I think that even a long wait in DUB is still more comfortable than going to FRA and take train to MUC as I suggested.

A long wait in an airport would not be my preferred option when there is an ICE high speed train from Frankfurt airport - the Deutsche Bahn station is in the airport - that arrives in Munich 3:27 later, with no connections required.

OP is leaving from Boston, not from Munich. Also mentioned that travel plans are in late May 2009, not late-Feb.

metre, if you check kayak.com, roundtrip (including taxes and fees) prices (listed as of today) for late May '09 range from the low $700's to $1,200's. This could change by the hour, as I've been tracking prices from the west coast myself.

Check metre's original question.

OP is looking for a roundtrip flight leaving from BOS, not from MUC.

Also, travel date requested by OP is late May 2009, not late Feb. 2009.
