The only airlines, other than those nominally British or American, flying between the UK and the US are Air NZ from Los Angeles, Air India and Kuwait Airlines from New York, and German-owned Thomas Cook from Orlando.
Third country transatlantic flights (eg on Alitalia) ALWAYS require a flight from the US to the third country (by definition, always a longer transatlantic flight unless that third country is Iceland, Ireland or Canada), then an onward connection to the UK. This will inevitably increase the total journey time by at least 50% from an East Coast airport - and can easily double it.
Apart occasionally from a few routes operated by US airlines, no-one stops in London en route to somewhere else in Europe. An Alitalia connection via Milan or Rome may sometimes be cheaper than a direct flight - but it'll take a very great deal longer
