Air or train from Rome to Bordeaux?

We will visit the Cinque Terre in May, and want to go to the Dordogne next. Should we take the train - it must take 2 days? or should we return to Rome and take a plane to Paris and train to Dordogne?

Hi Mandy
The train takes 18 - 22 hrs. It goes by way of Paris. You might have to change trains 2 - 3 times.

See http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/

I tried Monterosso to Bordeaux at www.bahn.de and found a couple of slightly quicker routes that don't go through Paris:

By day, Monterosso 7:05; Genoa Piazza Principe 8:18-8:55; Nice 11:51-13:33; Bordeaux 22:27.

By night, Monterosso 15:02; Genoa Brignole 16:42-17:09; Ventimiglia 20:09-20:25; Nice 21:11-22:01; Bordeaux 8:11. The night train has couchettes and reclining seats.

Use the airline www.airlibexpress.com Rome to Paris (Orly), and maybe onward to Bordeaux also.

Best wishes,

Rex
In this case I think the train all the way would be better than airlibexpress. The best I could figure out with airlibexpress would be to leave Monterosso at 9:03 to get to Fiumicino in time for the 16:25 flight to Orly, then take the train to get to Bordeaux at 23:08. This is a little over an hour faster than the day route by train that I suggested, but it would cost about 160 Euros as opposed to 100 on the train all the way, and it would be more of a hassle than the train (at least in my opinion).

Jahoulih has a good point. I think I just focused on the question asked in the header, about originating IN Rome. But from the CT, airlibexpress also serves Pisa or Milan (Linate, I think) - - worthwhile to check out these alternatives to Rome.
The Pisa option works better than Rome: I think you could leave Monterosso at 9:40 and get to Bordeaux at 22:24, and the cost would be about 130 Euros. Personally I still think I'd take the train, but it's a closer call.

Mandy:

May I ask why you're looking t Bordeaux as a destination? Coming from Cinque Terre, you're overshooting your destination by about three hours by heading to Bordeaux. Do you then plan to backtrack into the Dordogne?

There is a train from Arles that stops in Le Bugue, Périgueux, and a number of other spots smack in the middle of the Dordogne (with a change in Agen). If you can get from Cinque Terre over the border to Arles, you should be able to make it to the Dordogne in less than two days.

I don't know ... Bordeaux to Périgueux is only about one hour, and after considerable playing around with www.bahn.de I can't seem to come up with anything better than going via Bordeaux. (If you take the night train, you can get there a little quicker by changing at Toulouse and Agen, but the change at Toulouse is at 5:09 a.m.)

Perhaps even better is to use the Nice-Toulouse route on airlibexpress.

Depart 17h25 Arrive 18h30. from 29 euro.

You could leave CT quite late in the morning, if you choose, and still make a 17:25 departure from Nice. Then you are not far from Toulouse to the eastern edge of the Dordogne.
Many thanks for these fantastic replies!! I think we will catch the train from CT to Toulouse, then rent a car and drive the last bit - it seems about 200 odd klms, and I don't think there is anywhere near Sarlat or Souilliac ( on the train line ) to rent a hire car. Does anyone know about hire cars in this area?
Mandy
