air line tickets London to Edinburgh
 

My husband and I will be making a trip to London and have already purchased round trip air tickets from the USA. We want to make a side trip during our stay and want to purchase round trip tickets from London to Edinburgh but when using Expedia or other USA sites, there is a hugh surcharge when booking. Is there any way to book flights to avoid these fees?

You might also think about taking the train. In central London especially, it's much simpler to get to the train station than any of the airport (the Edinburgh trains leave from either King's Cross or St Pancras, I'm forgetting which, but they're right next to each other in central London). Check nationalrail.co.uk for fares and schedules. You can buy up to about three months ahead, and the earlier you book the cheaper your tickets will be, but some are nonrefundable and only valid on specific trains.

I also vote for the train between these two locations!

Another vote for the train - http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/index.html. It's only a 4-5 hr trip from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh Waverley and you get the opportunity to see the English country side instead of the inside of an airplane/airports.

If you check the Edinburgh Airport website you'll see that there are several airlines that fly from one of the five London airports to Edinburgh. If you want to fly then just book through the appropriate airline.

However you need to add in the cost of getting to & from airports as getting to the more distant airports can be relatively expensive.

Alternatives include day trains or the Sleeper train. Bargain Berths on the latter can be extremely cheap.

It's a great train journey; I love arriving in Newcastle with all the bridges and then after that you run along the coast and can sometimes see Holy Island as you go past.
