Air France carry-on
Planning on taking an 18" rolling duffle on my next flight. How large a purse/tote bag do you think they would allow? On the off chance that they would actually make me check my duffle, I need to be able to throw some stuff into a tote. I know the duffle is legal size but it seems they can force you to check if they deem it necessary. Just want to be prepared.

I've seen many people take a rollaboard and an average sized backpack as carry-on.

Hi M,
AF not only checks the size, the weigh the carryon. Check out weight limits. ((I)) |
I don't know the exact size they allow but you could probably get that info on their web site. The reason I posted is that we flew on Air France from Newark to Paris about 3 months ago and it was the FIRST time I had ever seen an airline enforce the rule about trying to put your carry on in that ridiculously small metal bin at the check in line. They actually had someone who stood by the bin and made you put ANYTHING inside that you wanted to carry on. They then gave you colored stickers to let the ticket agent know if you had "passed" or not. The only things that were getting cleared as acceptable carry on were VERY small. None of the carry on bags I have would fit...and these are bags I carry on in the US all the time.

I do need to add something to my previous post. The tight carry on restrictions did greatly improve the whole boarding process. It was amazing how much more quickly we all got in our seats when we weren't trying to put the kitchen sink in the overhead bin.

They're enforcing it (at least on the day you flew) to (supposedly) save money.
I can see it now: making PEOPLE stand on a scale and payong for "excess" according to insurance actuarial tables. Too extreme? Won't "fly?" If one airline did it and got away with it you'd see it universally within a week. |
Wow, they must be a lot more strict between the US and Europe than the West Indies and Europe. I've never had AF put my carry-on in a sizer, nor weigh it, and the last time I flew them was in March. This is good to know since the trend might make it here before long. :)
