Air fares to Italy through the sky

I have tried a travel agent, and all the online booking agencies that are well known. Flight to italy on dates over which I have no control and cannot change are very high. Is there a trick or secret to finding better fares? June 30 to July 8. from philadelphia or newark.

Maribethp,
Have you tried running your dates through other airports near your destination at each end?

Fares have increased quite a bit in the past few years and they tend to peak in summer, anyway. This close to departure if you have no flexibility on dates (flying on a Wednesday or Thursday helps) then it's not surprising you'll pay premium fares.

It is a whole new ballgame !
All of my old tricks do not work now.
If you get less than $1000 take it.

Airfares are going to be high especially in June, July, and August. An article about the expanding flights to Europe the other day quoted the European Travel Commission saying that, "although more routes are opening, don't expect prices to get cheaper."
Be sure to check with the airlines themselves, not just with the booking agencies. I have ALWAYS been able to beat the booking agencies by going direct with the airlines.

Well you've picked the mst expensive days during high season - so a bargain is unlikely. Have you tried each of the airline web sites - as well as the usual search engines and Kayak?

Don;t know where your going in Italy - but have you looked at flying through another city - Frankfurt for example- to see if it saves any (check Lufthansa).

OK. It is a high time but I did find that this new airport that Continental is using has some great fares.I priced out the following that can get you to Italy from Newark...( $790 from EWR to Cologne on Continental) and then you fly Germanwings from Cologne to Rome for $180....you will have to play with the times but it can get you to ROme for less than $1000...hope that this is helpful. You will have to book it on each website..Good luck.

The least I have seen today is 1331 through expedia. travel agent told me to call alitalia direct and agent told me he can never do better than online, but their online fare through their website was 1900.What about flying into Munich and renting a car to drive south into Italy. I am not afraid to drive there and could get an international license through my local triple A, but are there other issues with that plan.that only saves me a few dollars though.kayak tonight is 1400. The 1331 includes a decent two hour layover in milan. I don't have any experience using trains, but wondered if that was a possibility from munich south ward. We have a lot of limitations because my son is military and has limited vacation flexibility.

Eurofly is showing fares as low as $1200. Into rome, out of Bologna from JFK. You have to play with the dates, but check www.euroflyusa.com

Fares below $1000 disappeared 3-4mo ago.

I had been watching flights for similar dates for months and the cheapest that I saw was about 1200. I didn't book then because we were firming up vacation dates and all that. So, I checked daily and even had an agent checking... she was excited when she found me a flight for just under 1400 with two layovers. The next day I was playing around on the Delta site (a Thursday by the way which I've heard is the best day to get flights) and found a flight with only one stop each way for only $50 more than what the agent could get. That exact flight on expedia was showing up at over 4k on expedia the next day!!! It was not nearly as high on the delta site, but still went up quite a bit. Good luck!!

You want to fly in less than 2 months, during high season, and it has to be on specific dates -- and you wonder why the fares are high??

Even in the off season, you often have to be flexible w/ dates/connections to get cheap fares. In June/July if your dates are inflexible, you gotta pay the freight . . . .

3 days ago I booked our tickets to fly from ft lauderdale to venice, and returning home from rome. We only have 2 flights each way and the cost was $1002 pp., with US air.
I searched flights for weeks, on airline websites, kayak and others.
For us, the best flight schedule and cost was through the airlines.

The "trick" is to book sooner than this even though those "trusted Fodorites" say things like

"there is usually a sale" and they name some date

or the recent "fares usually go down after Labor Day" which may very well lead to major disappointment.

Unfortunately, those same folks are too busy with other activities when people like you post the actual results. Maribethp.

Hi M,

www.mobissimo.com has lower rates from EWR to FCO, as does www.kayak.com.

PS,

You could try www.kayak.com for EWR/LGW and www.easyjet.com for LGW/CIA (Rome Ciampino) for about $1170.

Kayak shows that the EWR/LON rate has been bouncing recently.

Also see www.whichbudget.com for intereuropean flights.

A month ago I checked prices for a friend, came up with under $800 Continental from Omaha to Rome for two weeks beginning May 10. Remarkable price and dates. As of now, that price doesn't show up again until the end of November. Between now and then, 1000+ ... at least today.

First of all, thanks for all the help and advice. Second, I never said I wonder why- I just asked for tricks and hints. Third- after hours of playing with all suggestions, we got a good rate- 1400 total per , from Philadelphia to Florence with nice layover time. one stop. and son just informed me that we will be staying at a nice farmhouse complex where there are such treats as the chef coming in to do a dinner for us, 40 minutes to a nice beach. Very central. We are thrilled. Thanks again.

For Newark to Rome and back, June 30th and July 8th - TAP Air Portugal has a $977 round tripfare on the Zuji site (use the flexible dates option).

There also appears to be better priced airfares for Zurich and Munich.

Good luck.
