Air Conditioning in Germany??
 

We are at the stage of our planning for a 10 day road trip of Germany from Hamburg looping through Eningen, Augsburg, Munich, Berchtesgaden, Garmisch, Berlin, and back to Hamburg.

We want to book online, since we don't speak German.

I am NOT seeing any hotels in Augsburg (hopefully near A8) with Air Conditioning.

I'm just wondering if this will be normal for the rest of the cities. It will be August and I'm sure we will be warm.

Any suggestions??

In my experience, it is almost impossible to find a hotel with AC in Germany. Maybe some of the newer, business type hotels.

While challenging, it is not impossible to book hotels online if you don't speak German. My suggestion would be to send an email to the hotel so even if their website isn't in English, you might get a response to your questions in English.

It's unlikely that you will need AC in the higher elevation towns of Garmisch and Berchtegaden anyway.

Are you overnighting in all of the towns you mentioned???

On the start page click on "Extended Search".
Choose folder "Facilities at hotel"
Make A/C a "Must have"
Fill in destination and dates.

A/C in Augsburg, what a dreadful, dreadful thought.

We've never needed AC in Germany. Not that it doesn't get warm there, but it's never been an issue.

Betty the site for Augsburg is great. We are overnighting in each location and won't search for hotels with air in the hilly terrain, but the cities are often very uncomfortable in the summer.

In Germany (and you may or may not need AC) we have found the only hotels that have it are the more upscale chain hotels. We've never needed it in June - never been there in August.

In Germany, the chance of needing A/C in August is 30%.

Almost 100% of the business hotels have A/C, but many smaller, family-run businesses have not.

30% is probably a fair estimate.

Need for A/C obviously depends on actual weather and the general climate.

Berlin can be hot and dry in August. 90F and more is not uncommon (though it was the last 2 years).
Hamburg has a maritime climate with not so high temps.
Mittenwald is in the mountains at some 900 meters elevation (appr. 3000ft) above sea level, so it stays usually cooler.

Yet, actual weather situation can hardly be foreseen, and the overall climate is moderate.

If not having A/C would make your vacation miserable, then I would get it just in case. When we visited Germany 6 years ago (or was it 5?), the forecast was for high temps in the lower 70s. By our third day there the highs were in the mid to upper 90s--and very, very humid. After 2 hot, sleepless, sweaty nights, we were like zombies. It was not enjoyable. If we had lived there, we would have just stayed inside with a fan on, but we were on vacation and wanted to be out and about seeing, doing, and experiencing.

Odds are that you won't need A/C. But....

Munich and Augsburg can be hot and HUMID HUMID HUMID in August and you'll appreciate A/C if it is.

Does anyobody really think a "business hotel" or any other would WASTE money on an air conditioning system if it weren't going to be used?
