Air Conditioning/ Fans in Spain mid April

Hello, we are going to Madrid Toledo and Segovia etc for just under a fortnight and shall use the trains for getting around (so no car) - however, as usual, the hotels offer no air conditioning even though the hotel rooms tend to be hot with child-proof windows et al, they don't even have fans: how do other people cope with the discomfort in hot hotel rooms.
I would appreciate your thoughts

I'd keep looking for hotels with a/c. Have you tried doing a search with that amenity on Booking.com?

ETA, I just saw your trip is in midApril--I actually would not worry about it then, but I would look for rooms with operating windows or a terrace with a door you can crack (juts in case of an early heat wave).

Haha, they do say air conditioning (ac) but they switch it off and only let one use it in the height of summer June July August - one needs to look at the small print, Spain is particularly mean on this front - go to Austria and the aircon works in one's hotel room no matter when
We all need to boycott Spain

No we don't need to boycott Spain because they take their climate change responsabilites seriously

In older more solid buildings, I suggest you make sure your rooms are on the north side and/or ensure the blinds are closed if the sun falls on the windows. Ensure a through draft. Certainly don't stay where windows cannot open, what bonkers reason would you do that?

Well I don't travel in summer, so I have no concerns, and frankly I think we might all be better off if we were not addicted to a/c in the US. In April, I have never needed aircon. Nights are cool.

I think the temperatures in mid-April should be pleasant. If you want to boycott Spain, why are you going?

We had no issues running our AC in our Air BNBs in Spain in October last year. And it was damn hot.

When we visited in March a few years ago, we booked Air BNBs with AC (my travel companion thought she'd die without it), but we didn't need it.

I live in the Basque Country and do not know anyone with A/C at home or business...no need, really, for 90% of the time. And April is a cool month in most of Spain...although climate change is turning these normally cooler months into warmer ones.

Madrid in April? You're not asking about heating? :wow:

It's 9 degrees over night. Bring a blanket

Agree with Traveler_Nick. I'd be more likely to need heating than cooling in that area in April (but neither critical). Fresh air (opening windows) is always welcome, everywhere.

Actually, I find that rooms are overly hot in the middle of winter in Europe. I break into a sweat just walking inside many buildings.

Hi mikelg, Same with my home, see above re hotels
Someone said throw open the windows but a lot of them are not able to be thrown open so that children don't fall out

Most of them can be opened, if only an inch, for ventilation. And I don't understand why you are coming to Spain if you dislike it so much - by the way, you are more liable to need heating than air conditioning in the dates and area you mention.

I found when in this situation and the room was uncomfortably hot I just got up in the middle of the night and took a nice shower and was able to get back to sleep.

Me too. We always turn the heat down as much as possible, but even so, I near sweltered to death one December in Austria.
