Air Canada Files For Bankruptcy Protection

..that's the bad news.

The good news: they have obtained interim (private) bridge financing, and it is business as usual. This includes those who are flying on Aeroplan points. However, you are asked to check your flight times - some may have changed.

AC says it will be business as usual while they get their house in order. I fly to Paris with them on May 4 and have already paid for my accomodation there. My travel agent assures me that there is no need to make alternate travel arrangements.

Sadly the way things are going.. it may soon be nearly impossible to fly with an airline NOT under bankruptcy protection... Anyway, this is kind of funny as just this A.M I made res. on Air Canada to visit Jazz fest in June.. but.. we'll see, I shall hold out hope that they hang in there 'til June. This will be the 3rd time I've flown on bankrupted airlines... lol.. maybe it's me...???

Sorry, Thyra and others, I didn't mean to scare you; there is no risk of your not being able to fly as planned. Check aircanada.ca for further details. But in the long term, some routes may be cut or rescheduled.

Sue, no need to apologize, I am glad to have the info. People need to keep up on these things to make informed decisions... Seriously, I've flown on 3 bankrupted airlines and never noticed anything different.
How the hell can our only national airline go bankrupt? Another great moment for the Chretien Liberals!

I'm no fan of Chrtien or the Liberals, but how can you possibly blame this on them? How are they responsible for the mismanagement of a private corporation? Are they responsible for United, US Air, and all the other financially troubled airlines in the world?

I'm not panicking yet however my honeymoon to Italy is already planned and we've got our first class tickets booked using points. We've been planning this trip since 2002. I guess I'll keep a close eye on things as time goes on.
