Ai! Any way to get to Italy from SF under $1000?
Hi there,
My sister has just invited us to join her in Perugia for two weeks in mid-July. I can't find anything under $1400 from San Francisco. I've tried using my frequent flyer miles and buying the rest of the missing miles, but all flights are full. I would consider flying into London or Dublin, and taking a cheap connecting flight, but we do have a 22 month-old son and I wonder how complicated this would be for him. Any suggestions about how to get to Rome under $1000 at this time would be so very welcome.
Thanks,
Esther

Any flight would have a connection somewhere - so why not make that transfer in London or Dublin if it saves you a lot of $$
Your cheapest fares will probably be R-T to London. So I'd look there first and then for 1) a flight from your UK arrival airport to Italy, or if that doesn't pan out 2) a flight from one of the other London airports. Bearing in mind you need to allow 4 to 6 hours for transfers between airports .

Wow! I just checked at itasoftware.com, plugging in a 30-day period in July. The least expensive fare was $1358 departing on 30 July. Hoping other Fodorites can help you find a less expensive fare!

I just looked on Kayak and while there were some sub $1000 fares to Europe in July there were not many and the dates did not look good for a 2 week trip in mid July. I suspect that at this late date you will end up paying somewhere around $1400 RT unless someone has a sale in June which is rather unlikely as it seems that flights to Europe this summer are quite full. I am assuming that you have a free place to stay in Italy so I would consider paying abit more than you would like on your airfare and go.

Thanks janisj, Betsy and mjs for your help. If I consider flying into London, is it that complicated to get from Gatwick to the alternative airports that the cheaper carriers use?
Thanks again,
Esther

Try flycheapabroad.com website. I've found that they post the cheapest flights. If you have a preference on airlines just call them and give then the schedule and they'll tell you which airline it is.
