Agriturismo/Farmstay Tuscany -- recommendations
 

Can anyone recommend an Agriturismo/Farmstay in Tuscany? I’ve been to the usual websites but they don’t have independent reviews. Slowtrav.com was helpful but still haven’t found quite the right place.

Ideally we’re looking for somewhere smallish with good food where you can get to know your hosts. The budget is up to 100euro for a double (give or take depending on what meals are included).

We’ll be using the place as a base to explore the region by car and to get a feel for local life, rather than as a sort of holiday resort (so it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t have a pool or horseback riding etc).

Would really appreciate if anyone can share the benefit of their own experience in the area.

We just returned from Italy on August 6, and I can recommend the Fattoria Viticcio in Greve-in-Chianti. The winery in set in the most unbelievable location in Tuscany. The rooms are immaculate 80 Euros a night, and the hosts are very nice. It is a working winery so you don't really spend all that much time with the hosts but they are very helpful should you wish to arrange a cooking class (which we did by the way and loved it). The winery has two pools, apartments renting our for the week or rooms for the night. It's also central to Florence (one hour by bus), Pisa (1 and 1/2 hours) and other cities. The town of Greve is a short walk downhill and boasts some outstanding restaurants such as Il Portico, La Cantina, Il Castellana etc... I can't tell you how much we enjoyed our stay. I only wish it could have been longer. Check out their website at www.fattoriaviticcio.com. We stayed in the Lucius and the Monile rooms's and the website doesn't do the property justice. I'd be happy to provide additional info if you'd like.

In 2004 we stayed in Agriturismo Castello La Grancia near Pienza (see www.agriturismo.com).
It is run by Cinzia Carletti. She doesn't speak English but still manages to communicate very well, and she is very warm and helpful.
We enjoyed our stay there - the accommodatios were very nice, and we were near Pienza which was a good base for Montalcino, Montepulciano, etc and even Assissi.
