Age Maximium for renting a car

Our friends at the great AutoEurope told us that the maximum age for renting a car in Ireland is 75 but that is their rule.

Does Ireland itself have a maximum age or do the rental companies each set their standards?

Here is a quote from the Irish Car Rentals site: "Age Requirements - Restrictions* The minimum age to rent a vehicle is 25 years. There is no maximum age limit."

TimS, on the same site , in the FAQ they say this :

" What Age Restrictions Apply ?
The minimum age to rent a vehicle is 21 years (maximum 75) and drivers must have held a full driver's licence for at least 24 months prior to hiring a car. Drivers under 25, i.e. drivers aged 21,22, 23 or 24 are subject to an insurance surcharge of 25 Euro per day and drivers 70 or over are subject to an insurance surcharge of 25 Euro per day. All drivers under 25 and over 70 are liable for the first 1,500 Euro of damage to the car (excess). The surcharge is paid when collecting the car AND IS NOT INCLUDED in the quoted price.
NOTE !The minimum age to be a named driver in a minivan, minibus or luxury car rental is 25 years.
NOTE !The maximum age to be a named driver in a minivan, minibus or luxury car rental is 70 years."

And in the Ireland Tourism website they say that most rental companies don't rent to people older than 75.

kenderina,

In this case, as in many, it's good to have all the facts. Thanks!

Hi powellretired, depending on how long you want a car, check out the leasing plans with Citroen and Peugot, (I'm pretty sure you can pick up in UK) and I don't think there is a maximum age there.

I have contemplated many things that come with age. Nearing 72 I don't know if I'm quite ready to have the car keys taken away just yet. It is good to learn I still have a three-year respite.

Thank you for the very helpful information.
