Age limits for rental car drivers in Europe?

Friends who have rented cars in Europe recently told us that there were age limits, that persons over 75 had difficulty and those 80 and above were barred from driving a rental car. They spoke of one American company in particular, but wondered if this was a general rule throughout the EU. Can anyone give us the facts?

No easy answer; it varies by company and country. See http://seniortravel.about.com/od/roa.../a/carages.htm for a partial answer.

My only experience was talking to a fellow over 75 while waiting for a car from Budget in England. He said Budget refused to rent him a car in a country on the continent (I don't remember which), but would rent him one in the UK.

I looked into it a couple of years ago in the U.K., and the general cap was at 70. We found a firm in Scotland which allowed me to drive as the "secondary" driver.

REALLY made me feel old -----

Hi NR - Try Hertz:

'Hertz International, 800/654-3001. Car rentals, chauffeur services, and mobile phone rentals in over 120 countries. No upper age limit (except in Spain, age 79).'
Website: www.hertz.com

Hope this helps ...

Check with www/autoeurope.com and www.gemut.com.

See what they have to say.

That's an odd expression. One hears waht people say.

Try www.novacarhire.com - varies from country to country but can be done. Lots of information on their site, you are placed with a major car hire firm and no hidden charges.

Have used www.nova.co.uk quite a bit in the UK and always been satisfied.
